BAND NAMES!

Coping: Personal - Off Topic: BAND NAMES!
By Lucky on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 11:53 am:

The most common problem you get around here when you're in a band is naming the bloody thing. Go on, if you are/were in a band, what did/would you name it?

By indigo on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 04:17 pm:

This is actually something i'm discussing at the mo (not that I have the musical talent to be anything other than a Randy Fitzsimmonsesque shadowy svengali, but my mate's formed a band). Umm... I wanted something Blur inspired, but the Oasis fans vetoed that one. Then someone suggested Strange Glue (from the Catatonia song) or Karaoke Queens.

By indigo on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 04:19 pm:

Anyway, just browsing nme, found this!

BLUR will regroup in May to complete their new album.

Vocalist Damon Albarn has been on tour with Gorillaz across North America throughout March.

Speaking to MTV news, he said that his original group were hoping to put the finishing touches to the record in a month long studio session in May.

Approximately 14 songs have already been recorded, but Albarn said that one song, 'Don't Bomb When You Are the Bomb', could be a single.

However, he was unwilling to discuss the direction of the band's new music or the content of the lyrics, simply commenting: "I can't really say anything about it, because if I did, you wouldn't want me back here (in the US) next time."

Blur's new album, the follow-up to 1999's '13', is due for release later this year or early 2003.

By Hallie on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 09:54 pm:

Bonsoir Clara. I think that's the name of a restaurant in Brussels. I like it. Has that "good morning beautiful" after taste.

By Quintal on Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 04:36 am:

'Don't Bomb When You Are The Bomb'? Ha ha. What a terrible title. I bet it's pretty funky though.

By Scamp on Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 04:10 pm:

I want my band to be called "Black and Gold".

By indigo on Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 05:11 pm:

Any reason? The only thing it reminds me of is "black and tans". Hah, my friends band have named themselves Remedial.

By Lucky on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 02:07 pm:

Remedial sounds nice. Bit hard to live up to though, hey? Because of certain circumstances, I'm going to change the topic slightly...

HELP. Our band needs a name quickish! If you can think of something PLEASE post it here. Save us from the rythmnmnmnmnmn guitarist's suggestion of 'decapitated piranha heads'. I know I haven't exactly been the nicest person in life, but nobody deserves a band name like that.

By indigo on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 04:55 pm:

Ok, these are the names I can remember that we all considered - Guess which one I had no say in...

Amorphe (french for lifeless or passive, I just like the word, or Amant which means lover)
A band called disaster
Metaphor
Censure
Amanita (a type of poisonous mushroom)
Destiny's bile

Oh, and my mates band are now called Chisel (?!), so Remedial's free. They didn't want to be linked to a learning programme.

By Karla on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 07:52 pm:

I heard a really funny/wierd band name the other day...but I can't remember it right now! oh well, I'll try to find out today what it was, and hope I'm not too late by the time I post it here!

....I'll just post it when I remember it actually! :D

By indigo on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 11:15 am:

I like the word defenestration, but I found out last week there's actually a band called that.

By Scamp on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 06:09 pm:

Indigo: I ripped 'Black and Gold' off my sister, truth be told. Over here, the cheapest brand in shops for everything - cat food, margarine, tinned soup, tea / coffee, anything you can think of - is called 'Black and Gold'. My sister was arguing with her boyfriend the other day and sneered that his band, 'Mrs Henry' ought to be renamed 'Black and Gold'. I admit I found the cheap shot funny.

Oh yeah, and I like 'Amanita' or 'Amorphe'. 'Defenestration' sounds like a thrash metal band, but maybe that's what it is.

By Karla on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 10:44 pm:

I still haven't found out what the name of that band was...but I just wanted to say that I've always loved the word Moxie. I could say that forever and never get tired. I used to like Endochrine, but that's not as cool as Moxie.

Moxie
Moxie
Moxie
Moxie

MOXIE.

Doesn't it sound cool? or I'm I totally off my rocker here?

By indigo on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 08:57 am:

Yeah, that does sound cool... and i haven't heard defenestration, but they were featured in "Kerrang! - The VOICE of ROCK!", so that's probably what they sound like. Anyway, my sister's reading over my shoulder, and she just read all my suggestions - her input? Why don't I just call my band Pretentious and have done with it. Ah well, i didn't think they were that bad - anyway, band names can be crap and it doesn't matter - I mean, think about the word Blur. Early 90s tie-dyed weird smelling psychedelic hippy shop?

By Karla on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 09:32 am:

yeah, when I first heard the name Kula Shaker I was like "what?? what kind of a name is that?! that's stupid" I couldn't picture anybody naming their band that. And first time I heard Radiohead too...of course I pictured a guy with a radio on his head. But it kinda sounded cool too because of the whole "radio on my mind" concept. Blur always sounded cool, soft and easy to say.

Spacehog was another weird compound name...And I ALWAYS tripped on Duran Duran.
It's like The The. Remember those guys? LoL

Same thing goes for movie titles, but that's a different show :D

By Quintal on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 12:02 pm:

Pretentious is a great name for a band! Mind if I steal it? Naw, actually, I wont.

By Lucky on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 12:05 pm:

KULA SHAKER!!!!! Haha, I really like that name. It sounds nice if you yell it... really... it does... ahem THANKS for all the suggestions so far, I'll see what the rest of the band thinks of them. 'Rest of the band' meaning just the rythmnmnmn guitarist really. The drummer's TOO good to come to practises and the bass player's favourite line is: "I don't mind, whatever you guys want". He's a bit like one of those vultures from the Jungle Book.

By Anonymous on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 03:42 pm:

How about Beaf.

By zelly on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 04:36 pm:

no use for a name. i may have stolen that tho...im not sure. However 'decapitated piranha heads' has now been claimed in the name of insanity for my friends band...thankies very muchly

By Thomas Pancake on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 04:59 pm:

No Use For A Name is the name of a relatively famous US punk band.

By indigo on Sunday, March 17, 2002 - 09:01 pm:

I like the name Mute. Yes, that's my final suggestion. Plus, nobody would be able to guess what you'd sound like.

By Skrooie on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 08:03 am:

Unfortunately you'd have to nestle next to Muse in the record section of highstreet stores.

Always worth considering who your neighbours would be, to avoid that kind of embarrassment.

By Skrooie on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 08:05 am:

That is, your records would be next to theirs. You wouldn't actually be standing there with Muse, unless there was some kind of bizarre double-booking for an instore.

By Camping Boots on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 09:21 am:

I was gonna say "Mute" is not very original considering Muse already exists...yeah!

Hiya Skrooboy :o)

By Skrooie on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 10:45 am:

(o: Hello.

"Mute" is better than "Muse" though, admittedly.

I wish Muse *were* Mute.

By caramel on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 02:29 pm:

Cams heaven has a new name: Prada. Lol :o)
You are not going to hear the end of it. I suggest you hide now while you can or else I'll never shut up. Hhaha

By caramel on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 02:30 pm:

Sorry guys I got waaayyyy off topic there. Back to band names.

By indigo on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 05:12 pm:

mmm, I'd like to nestle next to Muse. OK then, seeing as that suggestion was shot down - what about Mute Piranhas?

By Lucky on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 11:57 am:

Ya very welcome, zelly!

Actually I kinda like Mute. Got a weird reaction when I suggested it to our Other (cos I can't spell the 'R' word) guitarist though... What kind of answer would repeatedly banging your head on a desk be?

By Quintal on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 04:56 pm:

Kewl.

By Karla on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 09:41 pm:

No Use For A Name! a punk band? wow, why not just be Anonymous? or Nameless? hahah
The name of the band I heard was along those lines, but I think it wasn't any of those.

and Lucky, I like the way Kula Shaker (and the other strange names I mentioned) sounds now.
The names got interesting as I listened to their music more and more...

and LoL @ your band, are you the singer then? and when are you showing us a pic??

oh, and I like the name Buzzcocks! eventhough I've never heard their music.

By indigo on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:41 am:

falleninlovewithsomeoneeverfalleninloveinlovewithomeoneeverfalleninlovewithsomeoneyoushouldntvefalleninlovewith

I love that song!

By Bill & Ben : Flower Pot Men on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:39 pm:

How about the band name:

"Godblessamerica You Fucking Cunt!"

Possible album title: O#saa#ma

By ChrisZ on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 08:56 pm:

LOL

By Lucky on Friday, March 22, 2002 - 08:39 am:

Possibly not.

By Karla on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 - 05:54 pm:

Random Band name:

Sand Angel and the Halos.

By indigo on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 03:01 pm:

Did you ever name your band Lucky? In fact, why not name them Lucky?

By Lucky on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 06:38 pm:

Now there's an idea! Hmm I'll ask them tomorrow, we've got a practice in the afternoon. We've no need for a name at the moment really, since the reason we needed one hipswitch was because we wanted to do our local battle of the bands. We've dropped out though... too much hassle.

Haha nice one, Karla.

By Quintal on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 06:28 am:

I think Lucky is a pretty good name for a band, come to think of it.

By Lucky on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 03:48 pm:

They didn't like it. We may as well split up, we're never getting a name! Useless.

By indigo on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 05:26 pm:

What about.. hmmm... Sucky? Although I'm sure you aren't.

My uncle in Luxembourg was in a band called Surf Cowboys (they opened for Aerosmith! Yes, only in Luxembourg) and they considered a string of odd names (they picked that one in the late 80s...) and album titles. This was also hindered by the fact that 2 members only speak Italian, one speaks a Luxembourg dialect of Franch (and Flemish I think) and my uncle speaks English or German. He was therefore chosen to name the albums, as they thought english titles would be best. Unfortunately, as he was the only one who knew what they meant, he chose "Who put the peanuts in the pussy" (sleeve art - a cat being fed peanuts) and "Suck my Duck" (sleeve art- a duck looking confused by a Hoover sucking at its feathers). The rest of the band did not understand why they were not invited back onto the Luxembourg version of Top of the Pops after they announced these on stage.

By Hallie on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 09:12 pm:

Oh Roberta, that's fantastic! (Is this the uncle that didn't like how Brian Molko sings? ... )

Everyone, have a lovely day - I order you!

~ Nat.

By indigo on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 09:44 am:

yeah, I only have the one strange uncle in Luxemburg (plus of course a strange uncle in Vancouver and one in London - oh, and I think one in Poland). We're a close family!

By Lucky on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 04:26 pm:

Hahahaha. Just out of interest, were the Surf Cowboys any good?

Ugh, I just saw Ice Age. Nice morals and everything, but I would've been happier with watching that sabre-toothed squirrel for an hour and a bit.

By indigo on Sunday, April 14, 2002 - 08:04 am:

Yeah - I liked Monsters inc, but I thought I'd draw the line at Ice Age. The Surf Cowboys were ok - they got to number 1 in Luxemburg and he still gets some money from it. I think they sort of sound like Bon Jovi (you know, power rock, ballads) without an american accent. Quite cool - except in Luxemburg, I think that 80s rock look (bandannas, white jeans, horrible t-shirts) was popular for a looooong time, so all the photos, videos etc are pretty tragic.

Bandname - Asphyxiation? Although it sounds a but new metal, and it would get spelt wrong. hmm.

By Nat on Sunday, April 14, 2002 - 08:47 pm:

Hm, I have family in Vancouver and Poland ... can I be related to you, Indigo? Please?

By indigo on Monday, April 15, 2002 - 04:36 pm:

Yeah sure - but I don't think it would stand up in court.

I've only ever met my Polish cousins once, i think they may have moved to Italy. And my uncle currently in Vancouver was born in France (I think his dad was Venezualan, but my grandmother has had a lot of complex divorces) and moved to Newfoundland when he left the London Fire Brigade. Last week, my grandmother came over from Luxembourg with some videos of a group of cousins living in Megeve, in the French Alps, most of whom i didn't know existed.

Frankly, a Canadian (is that right?) internet relation would be just as sane as the rest of my family
;-)

By Nittaya Pris. on Saturday, May 11, 2002 - 06:27 am:

You are correct, my lovely lady. Hmm, if I were in a band, or actually a main artistic force in the band, I would love us to be called Bonsoir Clara (Bonjour Ma Belle) -*the bracketed bit written in lower-case script* - and title the record "Songs for the Bedroom". Is that taken? It sounds familiar. (Maybe 'cos it reminds me of PJ Harvey's Stories for the City, Stories for the Sea - is that what it was called?)

By JEFF FOLKOFF on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 07:42 am:

WE GOT A THING GOING ON

By TJ on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 07:15 pm:

I've heard of a band called Santas Bugger Boyz.
They comprise a drummer, a singer and a saxophonist, and during 2000 they released a full album EVERY SINGLE WEEK!

Bab names - Fat Tulips
Jesus Jones
Echo and the Bunnymen
The Sunshine Valley Dance Band
(original name for New Order)

Ace names - Jesus and Mary Chain
A Certain Ratio
Sly and the Family Stone
St Etienne

By indigo on Monday, June 3, 2002 - 09:29 pm:

Hmm, had forgotton about this topic. Seeing as Garden Central was wiped (at my request I must admit) I would just like to repeat some stuff I posted there earlier today, about my friend's band, which is called My Kid Sister - I like this name a lot, (so this is relevant to the topic!) although this may just be because I know the singers little sister, who was ecstatic to have a band named after her.

Anyway, MKS have the opportunity to support at some important gig, and the deciding factor is an internet vote. Please please please could you find it in your hearts to click here:

http://www.halcyononline.org/Battle%20Final.htm

and vote for My Kid Sister? You can even listen to one of their songs.... thankyou!

By Quintal on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 03:22 am:

How long is there to go in that competition?

By indigo on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 10:00 am:

Ah thanks Karla, and everyone else who's voted! I think the competition ends mid August, and at the moment MKS are sadly about 3 % behind...

By Lucky on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 07:31 pm:

That plum line will grow yet!

By Sarki on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 10:10 pm:

Your welcome Indigo! :) I've been voting alright! I 'wonder' who keeps voting for zedisforzebra? I must admit, they have a top name! lol.

Well, there are two days left to vote.... and MKS are 1% behind! Please vote today and tomorrow! Thankyou everyone..... except Sarki of course, but then he is a bitter, twisted little character.

MKS have NO CHANCE! Muahahahahahaaa!
Anyways, can't spend too long typing on here...I have votes to cast!

By Ikras on Saturday, June 29, 2002 - 01:51 pm:

Muahahaha! Looks like MKS are doomed thanks to my brilliant tactical voting.
Yes, Zedisforzebra are indeed the champions! hahaha, and you all have me to thank :o)
Not so smug now about your friends little band are you indigo? You'd have been better off not telling us evil coping folk!

By Shandy on Monday, July 1, 2002 - 11:34 pm:

For fuck's sake Sarki, why are you such a sad little cunt?

By QUINTAL on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 - 03:05 pm:

How about 'Your Future Bedmates' as a name for a band?

By QUINTAL on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 - 03:06 pm:

Your Future Bedmates (c) 2002
