Other Bands?

Coping: Personal - Off Topic: Other Bands?
By alex on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 12:27 am:

Hello,
I was just interested to see what the rest of you listen to, besides Blur of course. You'd be suprised how many bands you may be turned onto, or maybie I'm full of it and you wont be at all, either way have a try at it.
Okay, so I'm primarily a Radiohead fan. As most of you are obsessive about Blur, I am disgustingly obsessive about Radiohead.(the new album is out June 3rd and is called Amnesiac if your interested)
I also listen to:
Belle and Sebastian,
Manic Street Preachers(holy bible is brilliant)
The Smiths
Mogwai
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Jeff Buckley
Pixies
oh I dont know, cant think right now, nor do I care to list all of the bands I like, quite a hefty listing if I do that then.

By Toby on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 04:12 am:

Sorry, but Belle and Sebastian is shit. I don't get the whole Jeff Buckley thing either. But Radiohead on the other hand is brilliant. Besides Blur, Radiohead is one of the few bands who's b-sides are better than most bands a-sides.

Eddy (May he rest in Peace(London)) turned me onto Northern Uproar, but here are some of the bands I love:

Placebo
Bowie
Led Zeppelin
Travis (Though I've heard some of the stuff on the next album and it scares me. I think they're trying to be Carol King. Bird in a Cage and Flowers on the Window Sill my ass!)
Space
Spacehog
Phats and Small
Stereophonics
Spiritualized
Los Amigos Invisible
Plastelina Mosh
The Replacements
Wilco
Cardiacs
THOR
Cui Jain
Manic Street Preachers
James
Gay Dad
Catatonia
Rush
Badly Drawn Boy (who I like alot but is still as overrated as Pink Floyd, but I'm still going to see him in May as he's better than most of the shit out there.)
Beautiful South

And does anybody else love (or even heard of) the Draghounds?

By Sunny's Twat on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 07:01 am:

OMG a LOT of SHIT in that list. Not all shit mind you, but a LOT.

By Sunny's Starfish on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 07:27 am:

Admit it, you've never heard of some of those groups. I haven't, so I can't exactly say their shit, except for Spacehog, now can I?

By peter on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 09:15 am:

Ok, well thanks for the info on Radiohead new release Alex. But one question- what exactly dos Amnesiac mean?
I must admit that a lot of the bands on that list is pretty new to me, but I've never really been very attentive in that aspect. Nevertheless, our music tastes are all different.

And Toby- nice list there, they are more familiar. Travis is pretty good, I haven't heard anything so far from the new album.

However, Flowers on a Window Sill does not sound too good as a song. It's name isn't very attractive nor tempting. I've only got The Man Who album from them and it's pretty ok. I hate Track Nine though. Cantatonia's pretty nice.

By Toby on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 12:18 pm:

It means you've lost your memory.

By indigo on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 09:07 pm:

also an obsessive Radiohead fan - Oxford show on July 9th I hope!!!!! Almost as obsessive as my love of 70s Bowie (note 70s!). oooh, i'm going to make a big list too!

Radiohead
Bowie
JJ72 (seeing on the 30th may!)
Muse (29th May!)
Badly Drawn Boy (6th April!)
Placebo (aaaaah Brian Molko!)
Eels
Manics
Catatonia
Garbage
Divine Comedy
Beck
The Jam

i'm going to bed, will add more later....

By Bree on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 09:39 pm:

Marie said you're a prostitute.

By alex on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 04:56 am:

Toby- well its okay if you dont like Belle and Sebastian, but since you put it in such a delightful fucking way, your list contains its fair share of crap. i.e. Stereophonics(ha!) Travis(who I like, but to list on a 'favourites' is slighty sad, their nice pop music I suppose) and Rush, are you kidding? Disgust, disgust, disgust is Rush!(sorry, "for a minute there I lost myself")
Right now I'm listening to Depeche Mode's Violater, any of you all like them? I'd hope so, their fantastick.
Oh, okay, here's my stance on Led Zeppelin, their cool when your like thirteen(thats when I really loved them) but you need to progress musically and as a human being frankly. I still own I through Houses Of The Holy(thats quite a collection) but I cant undertand how you could continue on listening to that music, its boring really, you should probably broaden your horizons.
On to Bowie, aka God. Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Starduse is nearly the best album ever put to tape, its absolute mouth watering godliness. Very few things are better.

By kacy on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 04:59 am:

I like RH as well...some more?
Elastica (they annoy the hell out of me at times but I like them)
The Dandy Warhols
Sleeper (come on. they were good.)
Sleater - Kinney
Kenickie
The Raincoats
X Ray Spex
Wire
The Jam
The Smiths
Talulah Gosh/Heavenly/Marine Research (different lineups of the same basic band)
The Pastels
and lots of other stuff I'm likely forgetting...

By Toby on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 07:03 am:

I love the first Elastica, but you can't possibly like the new one.

alex - no question Depeche Mode rock, and your words about Ziggy are dead on (Only wish you could do Bowie the honor of spelling Stardust correctly), but Zep has been bound and ingrained into my being ever since I was 13, and I hope that never changes.

And Belle and Sebastian? Like laying in the grass with a warm mug of milk dreaming of painless ways to die. Snap out of it.

By indigo on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 09:29 pm:

there are worse things to do.....

i'm not going to finish my list as everyone will just disagree and i cant be bothered. yawn! i have to fill in the worlds most annoying form to get my provisional driving licence now. stupidly, i booked a lesson in a few weeks (I'm 17 on Saturday!) but I forgot about the licence!

By Toby on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 09:46 pm:

17!

Damn do I feel old now. How old is everybody?
Wait, I'll ask that in another topic.

By chut on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 10:02 pm:

I'm with alex. In one sense, the platonic sense.

By chut on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 10:04 pm:

apart from the 'gwai, it goes without saying.

Add to his list.........
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
Hefner
Ash
Jesus and Mary Chain
The Cure

........and Bob's your uncle, how's your father?

By alex on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 10:35 pm:

AH!!! Gorkys Zygotic Mynci! I have Spanish Dance Troope and...I really hate it, to the point where I'm tempted to trade it in, which is a real head fuck to me, as I spent alot of time in special ordering it.(remember, I live in the states and music, good music tends not to be abunduntly around for purchase)
Oh and sorry, I realised after I had posted that I spelled Ziggy Stardust wrong, thats grounds to cruficy me in some circles I believe.
I've heard mixed things about Jesus and Mary Chain, they where the first band on Creation Records right?
I used to like Ash, their to... Irish for my liking. :) Actually they just wore on me. To typical sounding.
Love the Cure chut!

By Skrooie on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 11:04 pm:

Eh dear, didn't we have this topic already ? Nevertheless, I shall indulge you :

The Smiths
Joy Division
New Order
The Cure
The Jesus and Mary Chain
My Bloody Valentine
Ash
Teenage Fanclub
Sonic Youth
Stone Roses ( especially the raw Garage Flower EP )
Idlewild ( their new stuff, not Captain-era stuff, that was pish )

Ah bugger it, I can't be bothered really. I'll post again when I feel the necessary gusto coming on.

And Chut, you like Godspeed... ? Come on, son.

By alex on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 11:08 pm:

I like Godspeed

By Skrooie on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 11:10 pm:

Yes, I read that.

By chut on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 11:22 pm:

lol, I have no opinion on them. Although I do apologise for missing Stone Roses, Joy Division, Supergrass, Beck, Pavement, Dandy Warhols, New Order, Idlewild and Sonic Youth.
alex, Gorky 5 and Munki should see you right

By Skrooie on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 - 11:32 pm:

Cheeky Munki.

By Toby on Thursday, March 8, 2001 - 11:46 am:

Last time a topic like this came up, it seemed like everydamn one of ya listed the Super Furry Animals. What? Nobody likes them anymore?

By Skrooie on Thursday, March 8, 2001 - 04:40 pm:

Oh yeah, Super Furry Animals.

They came out in support of Mogwai tho. They're big chums, so I think you'll find that brassed off the blurniks in general.

By GFI on Thursday, March 8, 2001 - 08:08 pm:

LOOOVE Radiohead as well, Stereophonics are quite good... I won't say my favorites otherwise I won't finish this year.... But I'm particularly obsessed with Travis and Coldplay right now... And I don't even want to remember that a few weeks ago Coldplay was in Miami's Hard Rock live or something for U$10 !!! And I was in Orlando just a few months ago! Geeez!!! Coldplay playing where I live? Hmmm.....don't think will happen at all, they're hardly known here..... L

Anyway Toby, u scared me with your comments on Travis' new album.... I can't wait to hear what they did...

By Toby on Thursday, March 8, 2001 - 09:18 pm:

I saw them live twice last year, and those new songs on the upcoming album were dead scary.

And as for the cheap Coldplay tickets. . . they sold out most of those shows in less than an hour, and people on ebay were paying over $120US per ticket! I dropped out at $80.

But I did get Placebo tics for May at a small club for $10. And I saw the Stereophonics accousic last month in the tinyest club ever for $10. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! 'Course I spent $25 on Guinness, and no doubt will do the same in May. They always get you somehowswise.

By nat on Thursday, March 8, 2001 - 11:48 pm:

argh, GFI, "yellow" is all they've been playing on the radio for the past 5 months..... crazy late and still going strong! (shoot me, please)
have a great day though to all!
love, nat.

By alex on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 02:17 am:

Are you kidding you scampy little cannuck, nobody state side has heard of Coldplay, their pretty unknown, which can be proven via their US tour, what was it? Three or four shows?
Skrooie, whats the problem with Mogwai? What is the SFA connection?

By Skrooie on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 03:16 am:

Mogwai had t shirts printed up saying that Blur were shite, so I think you'll find a lot of Blur fans took a bit of a dislike to them. The SFA connection is that they are big friends with Mogwai.

By Toby on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 01:18 pm:

Actually alex, Coldplay's been riding in the top 60 on the Billboard charts, Yellow has been in the modern rock top 20 for a couple of months, and Parachutes has gone gold (That's 500,000 copies). Not to shabby.

And it was only like 8 shows, but they sold out fast. Plus, they're planning on coming back for a larger tour later in the year because of the amazing responce they got from America. Travis has toured the US three times in the past year and still haven't gotten nearly as much attention as Coldplay.

By stereopop on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 05:06 pm:

I like Dave Matthews Band. I've seen them 10 times over the past 7 years. They aren't British and they are more comparable to Steely Dan than any pop/rock band around, so I don't expect too many of you to know who they are.

By Toby on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 08:16 pm:

All we hear over here is Dave Matthews Band, Dave Matthews Band. Maybe I don't get them 'cause I don't smoke pot. I do respect them for playing as many shows as they do. Something like 5 million shows a year, isn't it?

And Steely Dan, Grammy for album of the year? What a painfully bad album. Unlistenable. That if anything is an indication of how shit the American music industry is.

By alex on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 10:05 pm:

My hate for Dave Mathews band is great, they are so..trashy, just trashy contemporary hippie rock shite.
Oh, yeah I remember now Mogwai's t-shirt's, I like both bands so I dont really care. I know tons of people that listen to really great music but hate Blur, I dont see why, but obviously I cant take that objectively, as I am at coping and all.
Out of curiosity, any of you like Cocteau Twins?

By stereopop on Saturday, March 10, 2001 - 12:38 am:

Yep. I like contemporary hippie rock shite. That's me in a nutshell. Help help! How did I get into this nutshell?

And Toby, my friend, I don't smoke pot either. You are not alone.

By Toby on Saturday, March 10, 2001 - 01:23 pm:

Cocteau Twins were one of those groups that the indie press always touted, but then nobody ever had their albums, so consequently I haven't ever listened to them. I suppose I could do a quick MP3 now, but then I would have to interrupt the live versions of Bowie's "Word on a Wing" and "Stay" that I'm listening to over and over on repeat, and I shant be interrupting him this morning.

Alex, since you like Belle, do you like Aluminum Group?

Anybody like Possum Dixon?

Amanda, ever try Ecstasy? I haven't, but I don't know that I could resist if it was offered to me.

By stereopop on Saturday, March 10, 2001 - 01:42 pm:

I rather like this thing I do called living, so I don't play with my chances of staying this way. In short, no, I haven't.

By alex on Saturday, March 10, 2001 - 05:21 pm:

Toby, I've never actually heard of Aluminum Group, but I'll be sure to check to them out.
And you should'nt interupt Bowie for Cocteau Twins, surely not.

By Toby on Monday, March 12, 2001 - 01:54 pm:

Hey alex, I gave Spanish Dance Troupe a listen at cdnow, and I liked them alot. If your still looking to sell it off, I'd like to buy it. Click my name and email me.

By chut on Tuesday, March 13, 2001 - 11:17 pm:

It's good shit, as anyone with a bit of patience would testify i.e. me. Anyone exploring the one-dimensional soundscape of the 'gwai, yet investing no effort with something of abundantly greater quality saddens me. Well, one man's meat is another man poison. Or murder. 'Hair like monkey teeth like dog' is a bit jobbies, though.

By Alex on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 02:08 am:

chut, "the 'gwai" is one dimensional?! I could understand you saying that about some other, more hyped instrumental rock bands like, oh I dont know, Godspeed You Black Emeror!, but Mogwai, never. On "Come On Die Young" for instance there are songs like "Cody" that are slow moving mellow songs with vocals, then there are high energy, intense things like "X-Mas Steps".
I gave "Spanish Dance Troupe" an other listen the other day, its okay, I dont think I'm going to pass it off just this minute, all though I cant say I genuinely like it. Its a bit banal really, now is'nt it? I like something a little more exciting.
Got Coceteau Twins', "Heaven Or Las Vegas" today, great stuff! At first listen I thought, "the fuck? What did I go and do?" But now I really love it, brilliant, a must have, I do think their an aquired taste. Lets put it this way, If you like "Modern Life Is Rubbish" and think "13" is just alright, you wont like Coceteau Twins, if you fall into the "13" category and find things like "Leisure" to be rubbish, you'll quite possibly really enjoy them, when in the right mood of course, but are'nt all bands like that?

By natty watty on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 01:18 pm:

what the hel does coctcteaus twins whatever mean.
cute guy= brown hair brown eyes.

By Captain Meat on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 01:21 pm:

Hahaha. "Intense"

By TobyZ on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 06:43 pm:

I'm not sure what Cocteau Twins actually means, but my guess is that it has some thing to do with a 1952 painting by director/artist Jean Cocteau that is called Castor and Pollux or is sometimes better known as The Twins.

This is completely speculation on my part, but if it is true, then I'm a scary good detective (and hats off(hello alex) to the Yahoo! search engine for their Jean Cocteau links)!
btw,if you'd like to see the painting for yourself, manually type in or copy and paste this link - http://www-scf.usc.edu/~pkon/Cocteau.html

I've just found the '~", that little squigly button (hello Butter~Fried) up near the 'Esc' button.

By Tobster on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 06:49 pm:

Oh nat nat nat, nat nat a-ran!

Toby = brown hair, Jaguar 'E-Type' green eyes.

By alex on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 09:28 pm:

Right on Toby, you found it out. Jean Cocteau, also was a writer, but the name comes from the painting. Good job.(oh my god, did I just use "right on" in context, I must die)

Hey Captain "eat my fuck!"(a quote from a friend of mine)

By Captain Meat on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 11:25 pm:

I'd rather not, mate. Sounds a bit too intense for lil old me.

By TobyZ on Thursday, March 15, 2001 - 12:32 pm:

Since I deduced right (YEAH Toby!), that certainly doesn't bode well for their music, aye nnnnnnnattt?

By watty natty on Friday, March 16, 2001 - 01:44 pm:

well Tobyz, you've found the ~ button!
that's true, toby, I think, haven't heard them yet. So I'll have to listen first and see whether the name bodes well.

By TobyZ on Friday, March 16, 2001 - 02:37 pm:

By nathallie on Friday, March 30, 2001 - 10:23 pm:

alex, coldplay are MAD played these past few months - 20 weeks on the chart! (okay, toronto radio countdown - and i hear they're overplayed on muchmusic too, but sigh, i haven't cable, and thus must suck the majority of my home entertainment from the internet...). and the coldplay concert sold out in less than 15 minutes, so more tickets were added, and those were gone like lightning, and when it got rescheduled, the extras were soldout even quicker. so i'll go, most likely, to the scalpers... shit. and i won't even get powderfinger.

aw, and tobster, please don't confuse me with natty/watty/watsy/natsy... (unless you're him/her)

oh, stereomandy, i shake a stick at "i did it"... yeah, that's right. they made the crappiest song and vid...

great day to all!

By TobyZ on Friday, March 30, 2001 - 10:35 pm:

stereomandy!!! That'd be sweet Nat. Then she could say "Don't you even dare. . ." in one ear, and I could hear her say "I want to kill you" in the other ear at the same time.

I can't help confusing you two, lol. I've tried and tried and tried to figure it out, but I give up.

I only heard one song on Letterman, but Powderfinger sucks.

And nat, don't get me started on Coldplay tickets. $120 is just out of the question. Especially since I got Placebo tics for $10.

By TobyZ on Friday, March 30, 2001 - 10:37 pm:

I always thought "stereopop" was the coolest name on coping, but "stereomandy" would be the coolest name ever Amanda! You should change.

By stereopop on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 02:27 am:

To be completely honest, I used to hate the name Mandy, but I tolerate it now. Ha, used to is the wrong thing to say. Up until about 2 months ago, I wouldn't let anyone (except me and sometimes a select few of cool people) call me Mandy, but then I was absent from school for a week. When I came back, Mr Brady convinced everyone to call me Mandy and it stuck ... damn.

By TobyZ on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 12:30 pm:

It's probably not best to send messages as Mandy Cleave then is it?

Or does that mean I'm one of the "select few of the cool people"?

By TobyZ on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 12:33 pm:

And I was reading back and just got the Austin Powers reference in your March 10th post.

hehe

By indigo on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 04:42 pm:

Am I the only person in the world who hates Austin Powers? Mandy is an ok name, makes me think of a sweet little girl with her hair in pigtails- I'm sure this is very similar to you! Ooooh, i just realised, nobody on Copign knows my real name! A prize for the first one to guess!

By stereopop on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 04:46 pm:

Rumplestiltkin?

By stereopop on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 05:17 pm:

Do I get a prize yet? I was the first to guess ... not correctly, though.

By TobyZ on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 09:54 pm:

Ahh semantics, she does owe you a prize.

My guess is . . . Ezmarelda.

By indigo on Sunday, April 1, 2001 - 09:57 am:

damn you stereopop! what can I give you? hmmmmmm. A £5 Amazon.co.uk voucher? Well, you can have one if you want, but what about the worlds worst joke instead?

Viking called Leif returns home after a thirty year voyage. His wife starts crying when she sees him and says, "Oh, my darling, I thought you'd gone forever! Well, you're 70 now, lets go and collect your pension". They walk off to the Viking town hall, and go inside. They try to clame his pension, but the clerk claims that Leif was not born in their town, and so he cannot give him his pension. The wife breaks down and cries "Why can't you recognise my dear husband?". The clerk looks a little surprised, and goes and checks his records again. He comes back, looking a little ashamed. "I'm sorry madam", he says, "I must have taken Leif off my census!".

Thankyou, thankyou.

Who likes The Breeders?! Okay, does it get any better as far as early 90s go? Not really. Kim Deal, sister Kelly. Already it is amazing. But let us not forget Tonya Donelley eventually joined the group.(Tonya Donelley, as in Throwing Muses) Wow! Not to mention, Last Splash is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Makes me feel...fuzzy I suppose.
