Coping: Personal - Off Topic: Isn't internet a sucha great thing?

I was thinking about it and it hit me that the net is fantastic. C'mon, think about it. I can sit here and talk to ppl who are everywhere in the world. it's not like a telephone at all, cos it's more ppl at the same chat then it ever could on the phone.
hoooray for the net.

to find the one you love over the internet? sick.... just sick

By R~S~P on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 07:35 am:

Yeah, but what are you gonna do about it? Si, back me up here...

By Si on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 10:41 am:

Sick that you can develop an unparalleled degree of openess, being able to overcome traits that hold you back, such as shyness.. and starting a relationship that is purely based on perhaps the most important feature - talking? Developing a fondness for someone because of who they are, instead of what they look like... that's sick?

I think someone sounds a little jealous..

(Was that ok, man?)

By R~S~P on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 12:14 pm:

Yeah, that's grand. Cheers.

By caz on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 01:04 pm:

agree. when u meat someone outside the net u always get to know what the person look like first and judge ppl after their look.

To find love on the internet...hmm...
sick?...i'm not so sure to agree with this...neither am i sure to agree with you si, completely...i do get what you are saying - being able to overcome some traits that normally might hold you back to get closer to a person, and to get to know someone only via conversation and not being influenced by what they might look like...granted...but don't you forget some things - like that this actually might limit our ability further to be socially interactive without 'hiding' behind a screen, behind typed words which are being thought about carefully before being send on, not able to realise gestures and facial expressions, and most importantly the look in ppl's eyes that can't really betray us, not like words could...but all this 'connecting via the net' makes us less and less able to understand the features of social interaction in - let me call it - real life situations...just imagining where this all could lead us to...scares me - shouldn't we further our understanding of how to communicate with others in face-to-face encounters as this still causes too many troubles for most of us - to use the internet as a device to circumvent the restrictions we find ourselves confronted with in physical encounters...i'm not so sure if this is the right solution...
and coming back to love...hmm...do tell me what love really means to you...to care about someone, to want to be around them no matter what, to lust after someone, to find a soul mate...all of these...i surely don't know...but - and you might find this offensive now - i believe to fall in love with someone over the internet is actually to fall in love with your phantasy, some dream that is seen as so wonderful that it is aspired to be fulfilled...without having met the person you are in love with, without having spent any time with them (face-to-face), without having laughed and cried and argued with them...basically without having lived with them in the physical reality...love over the internet...is still only a dream, an imagination...living in a phantasy world...where those feelings of content and closeness are being enhanced only by your own cognitive realisation of the 'relationship' and not by the other person...
cynical? maybe...i just don't want to see people lose the ability to interact with others...not via this mean but face-to-face...

By Out Of Order on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 05:24 pm:

CONTROVERSIAL!!!!!!!!!

All points made here are valid. I agree with Si that the internet does create conversation, and thats important. So the conversation is there, but where is the love, For all you know, when you are around your respected net partner, you might see them in there true light to be the most annoying gits in the world! To talk to them without being in front of them takes away the embarassment of what you might say, it takes away everything that you get from being with them. Who knows you might love them and think you have found the right person, but then again you say you love these people off of the net, but you havent been with them 24hrs a day and seen them,as ThePlot said, lusted for them, have the feeling you neeed to be with them at all times!!

Both good points but I am agreeeing with ThePlot on this one. You can call me sad,a cynice or whatever. Though if you are in Love then I hope it will last! And Chris, this does appy to you, but your situation is different, you have actually met the person!!!!

By R~S~P on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 05:54 pm:

it took me ages to read all that.

By ThePlot on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 08:58 pm:

don't get me wrong si...good luck..and i hope it will last (just like OutofOrder)...it was more the social interaction inability that the internet seems to further and not really the love thing i was thinking of...but, oh well...

By Out Of Order on Sunday, August 13, 2000 - 09:29 pm:

Sme here Si, Im not having a dig at you. I was just stating that when you meet up with the person in real life, things will be completely different to how they are on the net.

The bible says true love is when you love someone with all your passion (sex), soul (emotions) and mind (intellect).

I think the internet would be mainly the last one, but prove me wrong.

By Carly on Tuesday, August 15, 2000 - 03:13 am:

I hate to knock the Bible..... but has anyone here ever actually sat down to read it? I've been doing so over the past week or two.... mainly the old testament bits.... to me Jesus was jsut this guy, ya know? But anyway, i find it hard to put too much faith in a book that contradicts itself on the third page. I mean, seriously, it's a great book, really it is...... but it's contradictary and it's very discriminatory (or however ya spell it). To me, the Bible is a great story and I don't know if I can believe what it has to say about love.... does that mean that men have more love to give then women?? I mean... men could have many wives but we could only have one husband? Are we shallow and unloving as well as impure and unclean?

I know this is a slight tangent, but I felt it needed to be said.

And please... no hate mail or really mean hate replies. I'm not knocking anyone's religion.... I am embracing the Jewish faith and I think the book has some valid points. Just not on love.... it's far too unrealistic. Love is whatever you make it and everyone feels love differently. Many can do without the passion or the mind parts. I'm sure there are others like me out there who are based far more firmly in the soul emotions bit of it

I'm rambling.... Mother of God... can I ever say sanything coherent???

My bit from the bible was about the love between a man and a woman in a relationship.

There, ofcourse, are other types of love in the bible including: family love, love between friends and love of strangers, neighbours or people you don't know.

I have read the bible by the way. But I've not studied it. I don't think I've got all the answers.

By Bea on Friday, August 25, 2000 - 07:43 pm:

Hi
I'm back after 2 weeks away... I was in Rome, celebrating World Youth Day, Jubilee 2000, where 2,4 million catholics under 30 from all over the world met with the pope.
I read all you said about the Bible and stuff, and I'll sure answer that, cause lots of you out there need some explanations.
I've read the Bible, and for the record, for me it's not a book you 'read' since the Bible is actually God talking to you. I use the Bible to talk to God, who's my best friend, and I talk to him as I do with a friend (or rather, i tell him lots more cause he knows me better than anybody, even the worse bits, and loves me anyway). Oh by the way, that's praying... this conversations...
God is love, and the Bible is actually a whole series of life sharing experiences leading to a life lived in love.
But it's also the story of a people, in the old testament, and you can't read that literally. I much prefer the new testament, all the things Jesus told and still tells me everyday, though the old testament shows God telling us wonderful things like "even if your mother would forget you, I wouldn't, I love you forever and ever" or "don't be afraid, I chose you and your life specifically, you are precious to me": these aren't just words, God tells each other this every single day!
And the new testament, that you carly say that all say the same about this guy, really makes me, and has made me for years and years, such a better person than i was before... much more open to others, trusting, loving, helpful... Jesus opens my life horizons and tells me I can be whoever i want to be, my life was made to be great. And he tells me that love is the only thing that counts, as he showed in his real life.

Well, this is huge, but I couldn't be quiet reading that... sorry if i've disturbed anyone... you'd wrote that we wouldn't discuss it anymore but i hadn't got the chance to tell my views...

By Out Of Order on Friday, August 25, 2000 - 07:48 pm:

Chris, you usually dont need an invitation to do that.

By Carly on Saturday, August 26, 2000 - 03:46 am:

and *now* can we agree no more Bible talk??? i'm sorry i kept gibbering about it...... it's jsut that after so many years at catholic schools having the book shoved down my throat, i have views on it that i should probably keep to myself. except when Goddamned mormons or JW's pound on my door at 6 in the morning. then i can't be held responsible for what i say.

so, no more Bible talk or else i'm gonna jsut bombard you with *everything* i think about it.... and believe me, y'all don't want that.

By Eddy on Saturday, August 26, 2000 - 03:27 pm:

World Youth Day. What a load of shit. 2.5 million fucking catholics listening to an old bastard mumble a load of shit like "Kids don't wank, don't have sex, don't use contraception etc".

We must remember what the ills the Catholics have given to the world, eg, Spanish Inquisition, poor treatment of Jews.

I am proud to be Protestant.

By cazza on Saturday, August 26, 2000 - 05:36 pm:

lol @ you all.

I think that religon is the most pathetic thing that got invented.
I do respect those who believe in god or satan or another god or whatever. But I don't believe in any crap like that. sorry for saying it's crap, but I think it is.
1. It only makes ppl start war against eachother.
2. The human race had to believe in something so they could blame someone when things/times got wrong, so they started to belive in different things.
3. Religion makes no sense at all. just think about it; there loadsa ppl on earth and they all claim that their *god* is the best/is right about everything/creates the earth. and that makes no fucking sense at all!

um, I have better things to say about this I think. but I just can't say it in english. it'd be too many misspellings by me and too many wrong sentences [sentenses?]...

RELIGON MAKES WAR!

Sorry people i haven't bothered reading the other posts...i just came across Bea's comment on the interesting subject of the bible and thought "ERRGGHH....KKKKKKKKKKKAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKGHHHHHH"...(REALLY I DID!) you seem to be deluded when it comes to talking to God! I have also read the Bible, and it is indeed a good peice of literature (for the time it was written) but, alas, it is full of contradictions as Carly pointed out. The beginning has no substance and the end is predictable. Like all Tragic love stories the middle is confusing and annoying. Pleade dont't even BOTHER with the hate mail and the "ooh, you just hate religion" crap...If anything, i KNOW about religion and am not arguing the merits of it...i am simply discussing the importance of a book written by some dubious characters. Who wrote revelations???

John. It says at the begining

By Bea on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 - 04:36 pm:

Sean, I was just talking about my experience... I didn't mean to say it's the same for everybody, far from it... For me, it's like that.
And you can't read it whole, in one go!

By sean on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 - 11:21 pm:

Ah but who is John...he is yet another DUBIOUS biblical writer/character....although having said this, he probably wrote the MOST interesting part of the bible. It's a shame it has so many moralistic undertones! Bea: i read it in the space of a few days...and have read it in bits before that...to read it one go would probably diminish the books weak story and make it more of a transparent collection of mismatched stories all strugelling to put across a vague message, already implanted in your head by the unsubtle paternalistic undertones, and causing it to give you a message that doesn't hold up in the light. I only speak for myself.
Thus the reading of the bible over the cause of a lifetime could have dramatic effects i would never like to expereince, and therefore i choose to read it as it is...Don't get me wrong - I HAVE AN OPEN MIND- and i love the obscure writers that write about spiritual "deep" things...but , alas, to say The Bible is one of these is a lie...which in the eyes of God is wrong...hahaha
