Livin' Thing by ELO. Go on...

By Karla on Friday, May 17, 2002 - 04:29 pm:

aaaahhhh so that's where it's from.....thanx Oom Papa!

"Making believe this is what you've conceived
From your worst day,
Moving in line when you look back in time
To your first day"

By Hallie on Saturday, May 18, 2002 - 01:28 am:

Hm...
"end of a hollywood bedtime story" by the dears,
"left and leaving" by the weakerthans
(for starters)
and that'll give you a taste of two of my most favourite Canadian bands!

By Oom Papa! on Saturday, May 18, 2002 - 05:48 am:

You actually downloaded it, Karla? {Laugh out loud} I find that song very funny, for some reason..... And it gets stuck in my head for inordinate amounts of time.

By Chris on Saturday, May 18, 2002 - 12:39 pm:

Half Man Half Biscuit are a good band, why not give them a try?

By indigo on Saturday, May 18, 2002 - 03:19 pm:

Splinter, Cloaking and Western Battle by Seafood, Empty at the end (the Electric Soft parade) and umm.... Juliet Bravo by King Adora!

By Caboose on Sunday, May 19, 2002 - 03:52 am:

I like Bruce the Goose by Spoose's Loose Mooses!

By Karla on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 05:11 pm:

yeah, that song gets stuck in my head for inordinate amounts of time too! hahah

And:

Nat - I liked "end of a hollywood bedtime story"! (the singer sounds like damon I thought)

Indigo - "western battle" (nice!). "empty at the end" sounds like early radiohead a little :D

And I still haven't been able to download some of the rest, but anyway Thanx you guys!

By Simon on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 09:16 pm:

Electric Soft Parade are cool. They went to my school :o) I played with the singer/guitarist a couple of times too. We played Tender at a school show, and he played bass for the one show I did with my old band. My claim to fame... oh what a small world.

By Simon on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 09:17 pm:

Oh, and get Silent to the Dark II by them. That one rocks. Or There's a Silence.

By chut on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 09:26 pm:

Dougie Vipond, formerly of Deacon Blue is linked to me in more ways than I care to consider.

How are you Si, btw? and Jo? haha, you and yours?

By chut on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 09:47 pm:

What's this Splinter by Seafood nonsense? Splinter in their own right, you meant?

By indigo on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 10:09 pm:

No, the song Splinter, by the band Seafood. I actually went to the trouble of buying their album (When do we start fighting - in all good record stores!) becuase the one I copied of a friend was scratched to hell - this even though I only really love the singles!

I'm impressed Si! I love the Soft Parade! Although I thought NME were cruel when they called the younger brother "the podgy one". I think he looks a bit like Jack "White Stripes". I like their newest album too btw (yeah, i know its not that new), especially the corny track about friends and school, and "I think I smell a rat", which sounds really good if you're a bit pissed and do it in a Pavarotti style.

Oooh ooh ooh, while I'm going mad and enthusiastic over bands, buy Loss by the Mull Historical Society (or just download Watching Xanadu) and I just got Cherry Lips (go baby go!) by Garbage because it is easily the best single of their new album. What else? hmmm...
oh yeah, the Cooper Temple Clause - See This Through and Leave is just amazing, you listen to it twice thinking "where are the tunes?!?" and then it just grabs your ears! I like Film maker and Who Needs Enemies.

whew! ok, i'll stop!

By indigo on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 10:15 pm:

Was that clear enough chut?

By chut on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 10:17 pm:

I'm sorry, that was cheeky. Not a big fan of Mull Historical Society, I must confess. This whole 'one man writing all the stuff and hiring a band for gigs' crap ain't for me. Unless we're talking about The Charles Machine, of course. Hypocrite? Moi?

By Simon on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 10:36 pm:

Lol @ the podgy one. Tom's always been a little big-boned. One hell of a guitarist though. Yeah, I know he's the drummer. Him and Alex can play practically any instrument you put in front of them. Alex was in the same class as me for music in my final year, and I think he was majoring on either piano/violin.
Am I coming across with little/no jealousy here? I hope so. I hate them really. Cocky and arrogant sods.
Ahem. Hi Chut, you alright? I'm good. No complaints at the mo'. And I have a summer holiday coming up :oD

By chut on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 11:03 pm:

Aww yeah? Stateside? Thankfully I didn't know Vipond at school. He was older than myself, of course. *Much* older. Got that?
Dear me, shows how much of a backwater this joint is. Deacon Blue, hardly relevant now are they? Were they ever?

By purkle on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 12:54 am:

By OpenRomantic on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 06:36 pm:

I live in the US but I have a lovely channel called BBC America. I get to watch Top of the Pops and Jools Holland along with a lot of other stupid shows like Eastenders! I saw the Cooper Temple Clause on TOTP last Sunday singing "Who Needs Enemies?" and was totally blown away. They rock and have an awesome stage presence. I just thought I'd say that since they were mentioned. Cheers!

By indigo on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 02:11 pm:

First we'll teach you how to mingle
Then we'll teach you how to kill

Oooh, I love that song! I didn't watch TOTP that far - I'd seen hundred reasons and some other vaguely good band (can't remember who - A possibly?) and I just assumed they had filled their indie/rock qotient for the week. I got really pissy at my mate who phoned me up going oooh! about it. I saw them in Reading once, shopping in HMV or somewhere!

By Karla on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 08:41 am:

Ok you guys, I've downloaded about 80 songs. Here in the USA, we don't have a lot of
options when it comes to music. I mean we do, but radio stations don't usually play the cool stuff, you know? Last year, some people recommended a bunch of new music to me, and I'm really grateful for that. And grateful to Napster as well. I got turned on to a lot of bands I've never heard before! and that was nice. One of the bands I got into was the Bluetones...I tried buying their CD's, but I couldn't find them anywhere! I was bummed, but at least I got to listen to them :D

Anyway, here's a list of some of the artists and songs I downloaded from Kazaa in the past few days:
(I couldn't download some of the recommended songs from Kazaa for some reason but anyway)

A (downloaded 5 songs) = 8.5 (nice acoustic...who's pete yorn?)

Andre Hazes (DL 3 songs) = 8.5 (thanx rickayyy)

Boo Radleys (DL 5 songs) = 9 (sooo cute, thanx Tommy)

Electric Light Orchestra (DL 1 song) = 9.5 (thanx Oom Papa!)

Electric Soft Parade (DL 4 songs) = 9.5 (especially liked "There's a silence"...thanx indigo and simon)

The Dears (DL 3 songs) = 9.5 (heard Heartless Romantic...thanx nat)

Fear Factory (DL 3 songs) = 7 (Prodigy on some serious coke...liked their version of "Cars" though)

Half man Half Biscuit (DL 2 songs) = 7.5 - 8 (thanx chris)

King Adora (DL 2 songs) = 8.5 - 9 (kinda reminded of the pixies...thanx indigo)

Lit (DL 1 song) = 8

Mull Historical Society (DL 1 song) = 8.5 (thanx indigo)

Phantom Planet (DL 1 song) = 8.5 (they DO say california a lot though true, at the end of the song...thanx heatherj)

Placibo (DL 1 song) = 7.5 (finally downloaded Special K. I heard of that song a lot, but I didn't see what the big deal was)

Ramstein (DL 1 song) = 9 (Du Hast, i've heard of that song before and decided to download it anyway...against everybody's advice, hahah - Punchy song)

Seafood (DL 4 songs) = 7.5 to 8 (thanx indigo)

Sunna (DL 2 songs) = 7.5 to 8.5

The Vandals (DL 2 songs) = 7.5 ("I am the ambassador, of fuckin' kick your assador!" LoL)

Weakerthans (DL 1 song) = 7 (thanx nat)

White Stripes (DL 3 songs) = 8 - 8.5 (very raw)

Zero 7 (DL 1 song) = 9 (nice groove...thanx rickayyy)

And I downloaded King Diamond (Lurking in the dark) in honor of all BC/Coping Lurkers = 6 (sounds like a cross between Yngwie Malmsteen and Judas Priest or something, hahah)

I won't be downloading more songs for a while now, I'm gonna take a little break. But if you have anything else you'd like to recommend, please do!

By Dave Hedgehog on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 09:38 am:

Parklife by blur.

By indigo on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 10:03 am:

I've never actually managed to download any songs successfully - what do you recommend? I tried before on napster ages ago, but I had to download too many programs (I'm using a Mac). Karla, if you don't like US radio, have you listened to www.xfm.co.uk - the twat presenting the breakfast show really pisses me off, but shows like the x-list are really good!

By Lucky on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 03:09 pm:

Try AudioGalaxy, it's pretty easy to use. They've got little message boards there too... but the Radiohead one is massive and they talk about bollocks, unfortunately.

By Karla on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 12:37 am:

LoL, that's cute dave.

And thanx indigo, I'll check it out!

By indigo on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 11:43 am:

aw i went to see the Mull Historical Society at Shepherd's Bush Wednesday night... and then I went to see Shockheaded Peter last night .. and I'm going to Camden again tomorrow....

thank god for railcards! But I am now £55 in debt to my sister, and £20 in debt to my mum. MHS were ok, they played too much new stuff for my liking, but then they have only had one album out. Historical Society was good, as was Animal Cannabus and Strangeways, and Watching Xanadu.

By indigo on Monday, June 3, 2002 - 09:36 pm:

Does anyone else here really like The Vines? This is the first time that I have heard a band from Australia that I could really get into (casting no dispersions on Australia, probably just the fact not much of their music gets over here, except soapstars). The singer looks like a baby-faced Matt Bellamy (I think it's the scary eyes) and Get Free is an excellent song.

By Dave Hedgehog on Monday, June 3, 2002 - 09:53 pm:

Matt Bellamy is a gentleman

By OpenRomantic on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 - 05:20 pm:

ohmigawd Howlin' Pelle (in the middle)is so fucking hot!!!! The Hives are coming to town tomorrow night but i don't have a ride and none of my friends are into them. I want to go so so so bad! ARGH! My g-ma doesn't think I eat right (I'm a vegetarian) so I told her I'd eat a hamburger if she'd take me. She's considering it. I would do anything to go!!!

Spose STL doesn't know how to resize. Ah well, as long as there's a lot of Mister Pelle. And that very nice guitarist on the left. He's funny.

Karla- try 'kick in the door' by Skunkhour. I didn't like it when I first heard it, but it grows. It's funky.

By Hallie on Friday, June 7, 2002 - 10:18 pm:

Haha, Heather, he looks like this boy in my school who's two years younger than me... a few weeks ago there was this conference we held in the gym, so I was trying to make it look like I was taking group photos whilst really trying to get a few with him in it... (and to drive in the "pathetic" aspect more, the other day he was photocopying something and left a sheet in the machine, so when my friend brought it to my attention I went "oooh!", grabbed it and ran out to present it back. Oh shit, it'd be too funny if he came here...)

And I really like that Vines song, "Get Free" (it's so much fun to sing, SHE NEVER LOVED ME!). I saw the video last week, played next to a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club video ("now she's gone my love burns strong..."), and I loved the contrast - BRMC all cool and pretty, and then the Vines all "fuck that, I'm singing, and I'm gonna pull faces if I want to, so mleh!". Much more engaging, and makes you go "oh yeah".

Anyway, nice to hear your grandma DID you with you, OR! Sounds like you had a fantastic showing. My mum's had to come with me for a few concerts too (usu. drive, keep company in line, hang out at bar). But did you have to eat the meat?

By The Occifer on Saturday, June 8, 2002 - 02:44 pm:

How have you heard of Skunkhour, Lucky? Did they get some airplay in the UK, or did you hear of them some other way? I'd recommend listening to 'Home', the first single from their last album. 'Kick In The Door' was quite okay too, though.

By Anonymous on Saturday, June 8, 2002 - 10:51 pm:

Yeah!

By Lucky on Sunday, June 9, 2002 - 06:48 am:

Nah, I've never heard them on the radio, sadly. Our demented drummer told me about that Skunkhour song when he was in a 'download this! download that!' mood. I'll have a listen to 'Home', thank ye! Just out of curiosity, where are Skunkhour from?

Here's a groovy suggestion ~ HOTEL CALIFORNIA! by The Eagles, a song after my own heart. In fact, VERY close to my heart. So close that I play it for 24 hours straight every time my birthday rolls round. Which reminds me, my birthday rolls round on Thursday. Btw, for those of you who are unsure of my true age ~ I gotta tell you all ~ I'm actually turning 56. And way back before I lived here in Perth, W.A, I was living the high life on the West Coast of the US of Fuckin' A, man! Boy, those were the days!

It was L.A, it was the seventies, we were all high and hip, jivin' our way along Sunset Boulevarde in bellbottoms, with flicked hair, retro tee~shirts before they were retro and sideburns too (I had sideburns because in those days I was also a man, and this was when sex~change op's were still strictly for the WAY 'freaky', and I wasn't yet that... evolved). Anyway, I was also a session player for the Eagles, & one time, hitchhiking along the Malibu Coast in the sunshine, I turned to the lead singer and cried out for no apparent reason: "Far out! Dig on this, man! The whole vibe here is just like a HOTEL! A HOTEL CALIFORNIA!"

We went back to the studio, did a bunch of lines of Charlie, and churned out "WELCOME TO THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA!" in one session only.
This is all true, btw ~ I should have songwriting credits on it but I was cheated and never got acknowledgedgement. So please, download it so those Eagles~swines can't make any more money, which by rights should be mine.
HOTEL FUCKIN' CALIFORNIA! THE EAGLES!

By Quintal on Friday, June 14, 2002 - 05:03 am:

Luckster, Skunkhour are from Sydney, Australia. Or I should say 'were from Sydney, Australia' seeing as they broke up last year after the release of their last album, 'The Go.'
The Go had Kick In The Door, Home and Gold Radiation on it. It was quite good, I must say.
They had four albums throughout the nineties and were quite well-known and successful in Australia. I saw them live last year at Viva nightclub. Very funky.

Lucky, if I shake hands with you, will good luck rub off on me?
My boyfriend says I'm his lucky charm, that I give him good luck.
And that's great but then he gives me his bad luck!
I try to get my good luck back, but sometimes he won't give it back!

You guys have good taste in music by the way ~

By Lucky on Monday, June 17, 2002 - 11:07 am:

By another curious onlooker again on Monday, June 17, 2002 - 04:44 pm:
