US vs UK

Coping: Blur general: US vs UK
By God on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 11:30 am:

I just noticed that last March, Coping had one of those fantastic US vs UK slagging matches. Can we have another? I LOVE THEM.

It only works if there are American twats who regular visit this site.

I'll go first. Americans are all fucked-up twats who are completely ignorant of global issues and are brain-fed mindless drivel about everything by MTV which is really controlled by the shadow government (aka the CIA) who are the ones that really run the country, not George W and his bunch of in-bred corrupt cronies, who are only there for show and to make fun of on David Letterman, while the CIA plot the downfall of third-world countries by forcing them to accept structural adjustment loans via the World Trade Organisation.

You know it's the truth. Let's go! C'mon Yanks - bring it...

By God on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 11:32 am:

I think that should either be 'brain-washed' or 'spoon-fed'. 'Brain-fed' is just silly...

By indigo on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 02:30 pm:

no, I like brain-fed.

I rest my case...

the truth

By Rob Ruck on Thursday, April 4, 2002 - 03:57 pm:

As far as I see it, Americans (the kind that lives in the US, that is) are only Englishmen who've been away from home for too long and gone quite mad... Homesickness can do that to a person, you know.

By MTV on Thursday, April 4, 2002 - 06:12 pm:

Big it up for rob ruck!

By Butter~Mobile on Friday, April 5, 2002 - 04:52 am:

I know that I'm missing the irony if I take this 'UK Vs USA' joke seriously, but why is it that people who've probably never even set foot in the UK and live on the other side of the world are so in lerrrrv with the place?

I know from having spent time there that England is as full of "fucked-up twats who are completely ignorant of global issues" as anywhere else.

By Killingflowers on Friday, April 5, 2002 - 06:21 am:

I'm from the US, and proud? Not really.

Everyday I communicate with many of the people God has described in his opening statement.

But, I have talked with many from all over the world and people don't differ too much.

The difference would be the popular media.

There are a handful of people who shelter their lives completely from the media. They keep a "good sprit”.

These people are idiots.

The best way to live in the US is know what is going on in the media but ignore it. It's an art to master.

By Hugh Grant on Friday, April 5, 2002 - 06:40 am:

Oh what jolly good fun old fellow!

By Nittaya on Saturday, April 6, 2002 - 05:46 pm:

Butter, maybe because there's such a romantic connotation with the place? Medaeval battles and castles, celebrated stories throughout the times. In such a densely populated island, fads and movements can see their lifecycle through in the amount of time it takes a small buzz to find its way across to the other side of Canada. There's an allure of quickened-pace for the person who feels like "nothing is happening" where they are. There's an attraction for the fallen glory of a people. The UK is a celebrity past her time - regulated to more common ranks, but of no less interest.

Hopefully that made somewhat-sense.

Have a great day.

Isn't Nat marvellous, everyone?

By Nat on Saturday, April 6, 2002 - 09:12 pm:

I should certainly hope so! (My sarcasm-meter isn't very effective over the internet)

I can assure you that it wasn't sarcasm! So your sarcasm-meter will not be required today.

England is a very odd, compact little country. It leads to some weird things - like the fact that wherever you go (university in Warwick, a flight to Florida) you tend to meet somebody you know, or knows your parents, or thinks they know you but you don't recognise them.

I didn't really realise how small the UK is until I drove from London to Edinburgh in about 16 hours, passing through the Yorkshire Dales and Blackpool- both places I have visited before when i was younger, and they seemed about as far away as Greece or Spain. I kind of like the compactness - you don't ever mention a town to someone and they go "where's that?", whereas in a bigger country you can live in ignorance of some major event that's happened in the same country.

I also like the fact that I can walk around London and go to pubs which are 400 years old, or visit a church in central London which was built 200 years ago in the middle of a vast expanse of fields - its a nice sense of history around you.

and nat - I agree that fads etc move a lot quicker through the UK - especially in music and clothes, so when you go to a different country, fashions etc can be quite.. surprising! but the thing that is most confusing (for me, when I've been in America at christmas) is the fact that loads of people seem to think we still live in a Charles Dickens/victoriana style London, cobbled streets, orphans, snows every Christmas, skating on the Thames etc. Weird. Then you see people in Florida trying to emulate it, with wadding tacked on the roof.

anyway, just some random thoughts there! Really should wait to wake up before i post on here

By Chris on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 09:47 pm:

That's not true, there's lots of towns I haven't heard of! I'd name some but it'd defeat my point.

However, I only heard of Newton Aycliffe, in Co. Durham, quite recently if that helps people to understand what is being said.

By indigo on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 05:14 pm:

Well, not every town obviously. And I would like to point out that I do not normally get up until 2pm on a Sunday, so you can probably disregard a lot of that posting as the product of a hungover mind.

By mad on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 11:29 pm:

what about Australia? What about Malta?

can't we make this a 3 way debate? frankly I couldn't care less about the UK or the US. Fucking supremist white arsed trash.

By Chris on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 07:50 pm:

It was so obvious that I missed it completely, for which you have my apologies.

By kaos on Friday, July 12, 2002 - 01:35 am:

Hmmm... that's interesting. Most people hate the US. As far as I can see, I value the government (even if the justice system is a bit screwed). I do hate the media though, it's very stale. It's really weird. Most Englishmen think we're all screwballs. Oh, and about being in-bred? Well, I've gotta say, you guys all seem pretty generic to me, not like your population is like 99% caucasian.

God, why don't you just join the CIA and make everything right, to your pleasing? Heck, even better, join Al Quida group and blow the whole country up, so you and your British friends can start anew, colonizing every friggin part of the world w/ your ideal society.

I guess I just lived up to the screwball/American twat thing? ooooh well.

By Thomas Williams III on Friday, July 12, 2002 - 08:39 am:

Yeah!

By Karla on Friday, July 19, 2002 - 06:25 pm:

I've always liked the UK flag better than the US one. I'm not into flag symbolism, but I'd wave an english flag faster than an american one....the pattern is just so much artistic. The UK flag actually makes the "red, white, and blue" seem cool. The Japanese flag is cool too.
