opinions of KID A?

I think its good. not as much guitar in it as i would of liked but thats just me. i dont think its quite as good as OK computer but still a very good album.

By Eddy on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 03:05 pm:

Just bought it at a midnight sale. Aint listened to it.

But I did hear it a couple of weeks ago at a Radiohead premiere I attended. Not as boring as I thought it would be.

What I like is the spine of the CD case. The black bit. Usually this black bit has grooves on it, and albums with clear spines are smooth. But, Kid A has a black spine that is smooth. Quite cool really.

By Joe on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 06:24 pm:

No, not enough guitar. It's a good album, but not one you'd say was your favourite ever, not even like top 5. But Optimistic and How to Disappear Completely are classic radiohead tracks, and ones I'd LOVE to hear live.

PS: You can make your own kid a track by getting an organ and picking three random letters from A to G. Now pick a number. Then roll a dice for each letter, 1 or 2 make the letter flat, 3 or 4 keep it the same, 5 or 6 change it. For example: A flat, D, F#, repeated for four minutes. Say something weird about anything that pops into your head. Better still, mumble it so no-one can hear. IT WORKS I TELL YA!

By Critical observer on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 07:30 pm:

I think it should please all the faux-intellectual beard-strokers out there who think a "tune" is the sound of a few xylophones being hit whilst some far-too-deep-for-us-to-understand-vocals are caterwauled over the top of it.
Self indulgent shite.

By Jensy on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 07:43 pm:

I'm not much of a Radiohead fan, but hey, if you say so... I'm sure it's alright

By Tousled on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 08:10 pm:

I bought it as soon as it came out. I think it's something that needs to be listened to repeatedly before you can appreciate it. At least that's what I'm hoping. I didn't instantly like OK Computer either, but now it moves me whenever I listen to it. A lot of people are saying not enough guitars; I say not enough vocals. Thom Yorke's voice is so expressive, even if what he says is "far-too-deep-to-understand". There are some standout tracks. I hope the rest grows on me.

By Joe on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 09:54 pm:

It's fab, just face it. Allow yourself a little pretentiousness. Stick it on in the common room and watch the faces of the garage fans.

By BIG BRETT on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 10:17 pm:

I THINK RADIOHEAD HAVE GONE DOWNHILL SINCE THE BENDS BUT I'M SURE I WILL GET CALLED A WANKER FOR SAYING THAT BY SOME SUPER DEDICATED RADIOHEAD KID
MAYBE THERE NEW STUFF IS TOO ARTY FOR BIG FAT IGNORANT ME BUT I DONT RATE KID A JUST NOW.
HOW TO DISSAPEAR COMPLETELY IS A DECENT TRACK BUT THATS ALL IVE FOUND

By BRETT on Thursday, October 5, 2000 - 11:47 pm:

BEFORE I GO, THE SHITTEST JOKE IN THE WORLD FOR YOU!....
WHAT DO YOU DO IF AN IRISHMAN THROWS A GRENADE AT YOU?
TAKE THE PIN OUT AND THROW IT BACK

By Lucky on Friday, October 6, 2000 - 07:33 am:

I thought that was quite funny.

By indigo on Friday, October 6, 2000 - 06:06 pm:

I have now developed a complete Radiohead obsession...
Last year I was just a fan, with a copy of OK Computer and a borrowed copy of The Bends. The EXCELLENT concert, where I got into the front barrier, bought 4 t-shirts+ 2 posters and screamed my lungs out at Thom Yorke and johnny (he was about 6 feet away!) changed me completely. I am now totally obsessed!
I recorded Kid A off xfm ages ago, before the concert, and I immediately liked How 2 disappear completely, everything in its right place and the national anthem. I have just bought the CD for £8.99 off CD-WOW.com!
The black smooth bit is very cool, as is the little booklet hidden in the back, with the same odd sentences (polar ice caps melting, pact like sardines etc.) and disturbing pictures in it. Radiohead may very well be disappearing up their own arse, but I don't care.

By boy on Friday, October 6, 2000 - 08:46 pm:

motion picture soundtrack is scary but cool

By Thomas Williams on Friday, October 6, 2000 - 09:30 pm:

Yeah!

By Eddy on Saturday, October 7, 2000 - 01:40 pm:

Damn you Indigo!! You bet me to mentioning the hidden booklet!! haha, nice trick though don't ya think??

And Joe, as you mentioned "the Garage fans", I remembered when I was at that Radiohead premiere, getting to hear the album for the first time a few weeks ago, me and a mate, started singing, "Re re wind, when the crowd say Bo Selecta", along to one of the tunes, track 8 I fink. And it is kinda Garage, with that jerky percussion.

Actually, a very poor percussion album, Kid A is.

By Eddy on Saturday, October 7, 2000 - 01:43 pm:

Sorry, spelling mistook, on the fifth word above there. Beat, not bet.

Where's Ian Booty, Joe??

By indigo on Saturday, October 7, 2000 - 02:49 pm:

I love the booklet - i have now photocopied it and pasted it all over every textbook I own....
heh heh heh that'll confuse my maths teacher

By Lucky on Saturday, October 7, 2000 - 06:50 pm:

Unless he's also into Radiohead.

By Much maligned female maths teacher on Sunday, October 8, 2000 - 01:24 am:

Or she.

By Lucky on Sunday, October 8, 2000 - 01:56 pm:

Indeedy doo.

By Ian on Sunday, October 8, 2000 - 02:00 pm:

Undoobededly. Kid A, eh? Hmmm...I reserve my judgements in the strongest way possible. I've only heard it once so far.

By Ian on Sunday, October 8, 2000 - 02:01 pm:

Oh, by the way, there is a BLUR NIGHT at mine and Joe's local music venue in a few weeks time...any Copers feel like coming to the Oxford Zodiac?

By bluberi on Sunday, October 8, 2000 - 05:33 pm:

Kid A has to be listened to in the spirit with which it was created to truly 'get' it. A massive pair of top bannana wireless headphones, candles, beanbags, maybe a drink or two on hand (or whatever turns you on). It has to be pure one to one concentration - and I assure you it will all make perfect, sublime sense.
If you can be bothered, that is. If you can't, then the album simply wasn't made for you.

By Joe on Sunday, October 8, 2000 - 05:54 pm:

Come on down to the Zodiac! It'll be drunken fun for all! Dadaladadadada!

By Eddy on Monday, October 9, 2000 - 12:39 pm:

Drunken fun for, now that you're of age, of course Joseph.

By indigo on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 05:18 pm:

Ooooh, I wanna come to the Zodiac! when, where, what?

By Joe on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 10:03 pm:

Soon, Oxford, Blur night!

By Ian on Wednesday, October 11, 2000 - 10:52 pm:

Fantastic! Blur night no I am am not lying to you buddy I am serious it is a night of Blur fantastic for both people with penises and those without (women).

By Cazza on Thursday, October 12, 2000 - 10:34 am:

I bought Kid A 5 days before it was released and first I thought it was a bit too weird. But now I've deffinately changed my mind. Kid A is a excellent record. Really cool and weird. I love Motion Picture, Morning Bell, Optimistic, Idiotique, The National Anthem and many others... OK, let's say I love the whole album.
My record case is in paper so I don't have that nice little weird booklet or that smooth black thing you were talking about, but I've seen it.

Oh, I'd love to go to Oxford, but it's way to far away from where I live :( *sobs*

By Anonymous on Thursday, November 9, 2000 - 06:22 pm:

it's like the worst aspects of a bad Pink Floyd, or ELP album. Snorewworthy...Nonsensical...Pointless...Shoegazery

Mind you, Radiohead are like Genesis really aint they...Stuff yer dad likes.

self indulgent 'electronica as a means of deep introspection' sprawling, deliberately obtuse just for the sake of it, Progressive rock, basically....Doesn't need any guitars, it is still pretentious..Still like 'Meddle' or something...Just all so self knowingly post modern...

Aphex does his own thing better, and just coz they may have listened to Stockhausen, or Reich once or twice does not make them the gods they think they are.

all sounds a bit like a Moonflowers gig (remember them, thought not)

Go see And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, they do it much better!!!

By technomuesli on Saturday, November 18, 2000 - 07:29 am:

have you read david quantick's thoughts about radiohead in Select??? (last page, can't remember which month)
he puts it so well
exactly my sentiments!

By nattklubb on Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 02:29 am:

ha ha, is joe's name joseph? is it? lol... that's me gramps' name! yeah! just assumed you were jonathan or joey or something....

By indigo on Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 10:23 am:

Yeah I read that Select article - all i can remember of it is some mad ranting about hoe Thom Yorke was the least phonetically spelled name ever, and should be Thuuuuooooeoguhme Yueoueeiorkyye or something.
made me laugh
wasn't Melody Maker a bastard with their Kid A review! The reviewer didn't even like OK Computer and I didn't think that was possible!

By Joe on Tuesday, November 21, 2000 - 06:10 pm:

Well then...who do you know that was actually christened Joey, or, if you will, had Joey put on their birth certificate? No-one on earth I'll warrant. Sort yourself out nat.

sorry joe! just that joseph never occured to me, there being so many jonathans around... haven't met anyone named joseph since ever (except my grandfather)... but now that it's mentioned, my friend's ex-boyfriend joey could be a joseph....
and i would christen my child joey if i was a christen-er. if i have a daughter, her name will be james. either james maida -insert my last name - or james carissa king -perhaps my last name here- .... boys would be raine or rivers, with a damon somewhere in there....

By Lucky on Thursday, November 23, 2000 - 06:24 am:

One of my mates wants to call her son (if she has one) Raine as well. What is it with you Canadians and Raine? Did I miss something?

By Randy Fox on Thursday, November 23, 2000 - 08:38 am:

Raine is a ROCK star in Canada

By Lucky on Thursday, November 23, 2000 - 05:18 pm:

Oh he's a ROCK star is he? RIGHT. A ROCK star.

By indigo on Thursday, November 23, 2000 - 07:35 pm:

oh shit im sorry for giving tw a reason for posting...

My friend wants to call her kid Amber Sky, but I think that sounds more like a stripper than anything.

By nattklubb on Thursday, November 23, 2000 - 09:00 pm:

my friend wants to name her daughter aquilla rayne skyler. lucky: raine is the middle name of a singer, and well, it's just a very nice name! (like rivers.... as cuomo.... and james is a great girls name.... as in king... and damon, well, i'm sure you know what that's about - 'cos even though the others are great, damon's name is the most unusual of the group/blur)
alright? ha ha, imagine pre-defining your child before it's even born... but i just KNOW james' best friend's name will be deborah......

By Lucky on Friday, November 24, 2000 - 06:12 am:

Ah, okay. No, no, I never said it was bad, just a little... unusual.

By nat on Sunday, November 26, 2000 - 02:56 am:

definitely! either i'm having three kids: one girl (james, whose best friend will be called deborah), and two little twin boys with dark hair (raine and rivers). alternative: adopt at least 3 kids, each of different nationalities from different continents. ('cos it's a bit selfish, don't you think, to have you're own children, when there are so many out there that need homes... sigh. well, i'm human, so i want some of my own immortality.)
have a great day!
love, nat.
ps - hasn't anyone heard of the model, james king?

By lukas on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 02:12 am:

He works on radio 1 now as the film guy. It might be a different James King. There was that one who wrote the bible. I think That could be King James thouh, I'm not sure.

By nat on Sunday, December 3, 2000 - 02:28 am:

king james just put the bible into old english in order for people to understand it better. james king is a girl, this model. (first saw her a few years ago on some fashion television, when she was only 17). i hear she's the girl in that filter video...

I'm a Radiohead fan, and this Kid A-bashing isn't really necessary - you don't like the songs, fair enough. But why say it's pretentious? It's not "deliberately obtuse: maybe it's just a little bit different from some other bands?
