Blur- Greatest Hits etc

Coping: Blur general: Blur- Greatest Hits etc
By Eddy on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 01:29 pm:

See the NME about details of the Greatest Hits album.

I'm really ashamed that it's such bollocks.

I fucking hate Blur now, I don't think I can look forward to the new material.

By sarah on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 06:00 pm:

Ta Eddie, I'll go and check out the NME website now.

By the way, Steve Lamacq is apparently playing the new single Black Book tonight between 8 and 10pm (R1). I know the greatest hits bollox kinda dampens any enthusiasm, but this song is rather ace. If it's anything like the version they played at Meltdown and not a 10-minute prog-rock monstrosity.

By sarah on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 06:03 pm:

oh okay forget that. the new single ain't Black Book at all. shit and i really liked that song. it's now going to be Music is my Radar. go to nme.com if ya don't believe me!

By Ian on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 08:39 pm:

Who cares? It's Blur! It's a new single! How can anything they do ever fail to disappoint? I'm amazed at the pessimism on this site! They will rock our tits off!

By Ian on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 08:45 pm:

FUCKING HELL! WITH THE BEST OF YOU ALSO GET A CD OF THE WEMBLEY GIG IN DECEMBER!!!
YES!!! Fuck you lot, that was the best gig of my life and would be worth the money alone!

By Ian on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 08:54 pm:

Having said that the rest of the cd does look a bit disappointing.
I got way ahead of myself.
Buy the best of for your mum, and keep the live cd for yourself is my advice.

By Joe on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 - 09:57 pm:

Well fuck I've just tuned in and missed it by half an hour. BOLLOCKS!!!! Single released October 16th, exactley nine days after my birthday btw (the ghost of tam lives on). Now I'm listening to a rather poor punk-pop song about killing Lisa from steps, Celine Dion, Cliff Richard, and rather oddly Bob Dillon and every single Welsh band ever, particularly (and who can blame them) Kelly Jones. It sounds like it cost about 2p to record, and they could have gone for Stuart Cable instead.

Someone just rang in and said the new Blur song sounds like SFA if SFA were shit. It's good enough for me! This is because A. SFA are great and B. This is a bloke who clearly doesn't like Blur so it presumably sounds like SFA if SFA were Blur.

Apparently Damon has a new "garage" direction. Shit.

By Dave Hedgehog on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 06:20 am:

I've heard it

By Lucky on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 08:49 am:

What exactly is garage? I've heard different explanations of it, so now I've got no idea of what it is at all. Could someone explain, please?

By Lucky on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 08:50 am:

What the hell am I saying? Knowing the reputation of this place you'll all probably tell me it's where people park cars... Sigh.

By Joe on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 09:31 am:

Well I've heard the track now from NME.com...I'm sorry to say it sounds rather like Rock DJ by Robbie Williams. And it's nowhere near as good as Black Book.

By Joe on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 09:39 am:

Lucky, if you don't know, garage is sort of beats with a bloke singing out of tune over it, with a sample from either and old disco record or a TV show or another garage record. It is also shit, and it peppers our charts like acne.

Unfortunately Damon was last seen "freestyling" with "MC Sweetie Irie" at the Notting Hill Carnival. A collaboration is reportadly "on the cards".

By Joe on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 09:41 am:

The SFA but shit comment could be justified....

By Joe on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 09:48 am:

It's now been three minutes since I heard the track and it's still in my head....well they did disco with Girls and Boys and that was pretty cool...and it does sound like SFA...the problem with it is that Gruf from SFA always sounds laid back, cool and, well, friendly. Damon on this sounds arrogant and smug, exactley like he does on Hippy Children. Weird...eleven years and we're back to square one.

By Ian on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 01:37 pm:

Errr...I've just heard it and...
errr....I'm sure it's ironic...
but...Ummmm....
EITHER WAY IT SOUNDED SHITE.
Maybe its a joke. Maybe my ears aren't working. I didn't fall in love with 13 first listen either, maybe this'll grow on me.
Oh god.
How did Graham allow this? Surely even Alex had reservations? I bet Damon was running the show with one...
Hmmm...The rude boys may well have a fucking field day with this one...

By Eddy on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 02:07 pm:

Yeah.... I have just broken tradition and listened to a song by a band that I love pre-release/pre purchase.

I am very reserved, but will remain optimistic until I here it on a big fuck off stero.

A wee bit salsa, a wee bit........ umm......

By Laden on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 03:17 pm:

I just listened to that new song 'music is my radar'. First off, I love blur. I've liked everything from 'Boys & Girls' to 'Song 2' and 'Tender', but I didn't like this song. Reminds me of Soul Coughing or maybe an interlude off a Pearl Jam CD for chrissake. I was in denial for about a minute or two trying to tell myself it was good, then I just admitted it.

I suppose if I was british, I'd say this was bollocks...:)

instead, I'll say it sucks balls.

at least I still have the new radiohead CD to look forward to...

By Joe on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 06:45 pm:

Well I reckon that's going to be shit as well.

My lovely lady friend pointed out what it sounds exactley like: the japanese street band that supported Blur at Meltdown. It sounds fucking identical to them. Except for some reason they were good, and this....well...

I really can't imagine the other members of Blur going along with it at all. Graham plays fuck all guitar, Alex plays fuck all bass and the drums are programmed. What a load of toss.

If it was a b-side or album track it would be a mildly interesting diversion. Instead it's insulting. Tender was different but it was also fantastic...anything off 13 is definitely listenable to, despite their claims. Anything off either Graham's albums is too.

Doesn't the chorus remind you of "Bag It Up" by Geri Halliwell?

By Lucky on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 08:06 pm:

WHAT?

NO! Please tell me you're all lying! I didn't see this. This never happened. I'm not awake, I'm having a dream... yeah... I must be...

AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH

Oh what happened to the lovely, lovely music they used to make? Why was I not 15 back then? Why, why WHY?????? No, wait, I won't jump to conclusions... even though every other Blur fan doesn't like it... maybe I'll like it... yeah... maybe I'll like it and everything'll be fine... NO IT WON'T. WHAT IF I'M THE ONLY PERSON ON THE PLANET WHO LIKES IT? My gawd, I don't think I've been so worried about something for years.

By Chris on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 08:09 pm:

Oh dear... it's not very good is it? Just typical trying-to-be-experimental-but-using-every-musical-cliche-in the-book Blur. I'm annoyed that they are letting themselves sink to these depths, do they think that being established artists means they can release any old bollocks and expect people to buy it? It has to be one of the dullest, most unimaginative things they've ever done.

By Anonymous on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 08:30 pm:

I think it's catchy. Mind you I only think this after listening to it 10 times. The first time I pretty much held the same opinion of everyone else. Kinda squirming around in my chair, really. Damn....well they have proved that they can 'do' pop, disco (sort of) and heavy, let them have their fun. Is there a place I can hear Black Book? Seriously.

By indigo but a little off-colour on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 09:47 pm:

Oh I got in from school to hear "and that was the new single by Blur" DAMN XFM TO HELL I keep missing it! oh please don't let it be as shite as everyone says
please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please

Oh well, if there is a live CD of the Wembley gig with the best of, that makes up for everything. I don't think I'll be able to listen to it without crying....

Anyway, i just got my lovely signed copy of JJ72 so i WILL BE HAPPY

Oh God I'm back at school, Radiohead and Blur are going mad WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD?

By BIG BRETT on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 - 10:28 pm:

By Patricia on Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 10:31 am:

I am sorry but I am going to have to disagree with all of you.

I have listened to the new single, Music is my Radar, and I think it is absolutely fab.

It is definitely superior to any of the singles off 13.

By Ian on Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 06:33 pm:

Conspiracy theory>--> what if Blur, hating the idea of a greatest hits album released a really wanky song on purpose whilst holding the brilliant "Black Book" for their next proper album. It is not as if they need the money, is it?

By Chris on Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 06:34 pm:

Well done Big Brett, particularly on your History grade, what are your plans for the future now you've got these passes under your belt?

And regarding Music Is My Radar, I was a little hasty - it's quite a catchy tune really, although I don't think it's in the same league as Coffee & TV and Tender to be honest. Now I'm really intrigued to hear Black Book. I heard Blur will be recording the rest of album starting in October, can anyone confirm this?

By Joe on Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 06:53 pm:

I think they've already started. According to Graham it sounds like "a little train that kids ride on in a zoo." So now you know.

And MIMR is still shit. Sorry, but although it doesn't sound like anything they've done previously, they've also lost any sense of identity they've built up. Our only hope is that Black Book is on the next album.

I bet Alex hates it. I bet Graham doesn't mind it. I bet Dave hates it but wouldn't say anything. I bet Damon fucking loves it.

In its favour:

It's a return to a more poppy, upbeat thing which is what we all wanted.

It's quite a funky thing. I bet Alex likes it really.

It's not too bad musically...it's the vocal that really lets it down. Primal Scream could have pulled it off better. Damon sounds...well...too damn white. He's a little white boy and he can't pull it off.

By indigo on Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 08:31 pm:

Who's watching Rock profile on UK Play tonight? They're doing Blur........
I am undecided whether Rock Profile is actually funny, but the impression of Alex is uncanny.

By Lucky on Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 08:39 pm:

My worst nightmare has come true. I am now officially the only person on the planet who likes 'Music is my Radar'...

Except Patricia.

By Ian on Friday, September 8, 2000 - 06:10 pm:

I've seen the advert for Rock Profile, I thought it was fairly funny...The programme is very hit and miss usually but occasionally flashes with brilliance.

By BB on Friday, September 8, 2000 - 10:19 pm:

THANKYOU PALS FOR YOUR CONGRATULATIONS! I ONLY LIKE HISTORY BECAUSE IT INCLUDES PEOPLE GETTING KILLED SO I ENJOY IT A BIT BUT I FINK I SHOULD HIDE MY EXAM RESULTS AND GO FOR HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH A RICH OLD WOMAN AND LIVE ON THE DOLE! EITHER THAT OR TOP MYSELF OR EVEN WORSE BECOME A TRUCKER OR A BRICKY LIKE I HAD PLANNED

By Chris on Friday, September 8, 2000 - 10:29 pm:

Thanks for the information Joe, I have to agree with you that MIMR seems like a step down after past glories - although as you say it is quite an upbeat number.

And Big Brett, your results weren't all that bad! People tend to forget that an E is still a GCSE pass, no reason why you should become a trucker (unless you actually want to!)

By tam on Saturday, September 9, 2000 - 02:21 am:

i heard it over the phone...the new single it was alrite i couldn't hear too well

neways i'm homesick back to toronto tho...so take care everyone...while i'm miserable without a comp.

By Arresting Occifre on Sunday, September 10, 2000 - 07:41 am:

I like Music Is My Radar too, Lucky. Dont worry, we'll ride this one out by ourselves.

By Lucky on Sunday, September 10, 2000 - 12:33 pm:

Oh thankyouthankyouthankyou.

By Anonymous on Sunday, September 10, 2000 - 01:49 pm:

I like it too and almost everyone at Zeal mailing list likes it!

By Hazel C. Hoax on Sunday, September 10, 2000 - 05:22 pm:

Hey...why you guys are so mad with the new song...Hellooooo??? It's Blur, the best fukin' band in the world...maybe you can't see that, coz you are in Uk... but when you live in the 3rd Worl (CHILE) you can see this kind of news like a "sunshine"...I heard "Music is my Radar" and I never listened something like that before..is like "Music", country music, and Beck all together...and Damon saying "dancing on my...", is great...Finally...a question: Will Black Book be like b-side of Music is my Radar?

By kacy on Monday, September 11, 2000 - 02:55 am:

I rather like it and I know Alex does too, he said so somewhere and was quite pleased. I really don't think Damon's so much of a dictator that no one else gets input. Graham has a huge influence, and just cos there's not much guitar doesn't mean he didn't have his input. There's no reason for everyone to get so narked over a stopgap single, anyway.

By Chris on Monday, September 11, 2000 - 03:23 pm:

Well of course Blur like it, it's what's going to put cigarettes on the table for the next six months, doesn't mean to say we have to as well. (Although actually I do quite like it now.)

By Joe on Monday, September 11, 2000 - 10:23 pm:

Well I'm the cool one because I don't like it and it's always cool to be an outsider and be moaning about something. But most of you guys haven't heard Black Book, and don't know how fantastic it was. This feels like a real step backwards.

By Flx on Tuesday, September 12, 2000 - 08:52 pm:

Music is my radar... well it's early to say something, we should really wait to hear the song on a CD or mp3. Anyway I hoped to have a new punkish rock single from Blur, but I think I'll die before to see that.

By Arresting Occifer on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 04:03 am:

I hope you do.

By sarah on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 - 07:34 pm:

Joe... i agree.
if this song was by some other band, i wouldn't find it so bad, but Blur have soundtracked my goddam life. MIMR "doesn't say anything to me about my life" (as Damon once said about grunge back in '92 or whenever). So it's upbeat and you can dance to it? I can dance to fucking Britney Spears! Black Book's the B-side though, so I'm pretty happy.
Anyway I am quite upset at the moment, because the object of my unspoken lurve has gone to university. "It's over... although it never really began, but in my heart it was so real...." That was from a Smiths song btw. The next time I will see him is at some godawful coffee morning meet-up in the year 2005... as if I'm actually going to go. Hmm, I suppose I might see him in my home-town in the holidays. But, such a long time to wait, and for what?? Oh, woe is me!!

By Ian on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 - 09:11 pm:

The whole leaving girlfriend/boyfriend behind and going to university process seems very stressful to me.

By indigo in an amazingly good mood on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 - 09:24 pm:

I have heard MIMR! OK, only about a month after everyone else but still.... I'm going to be really optimistic and say it's a grower... same as kid A is. I actually started singing along to both of them this morning, which has to be good.

I AM SO HAPPY! I AM SEEING RADIOHEAD ON SATURDAY!

By sarah on Thursday, September 21, 2000 - 11:50 am:

'boyfriend'? well, i wouldn't go that far. i'm not sure if i'd even go as far as 'friend'! yes, i really am that sad that i don't want to leave someone i barely know.
oh well... "let's all meet up in the year 2005, won't it be strange when we're all fully gro-o-o-own" God, I love Pulp.

By bubbles on Friday, September 22, 2000 - 05:36 am:

By Thomas Williams on Sunday, September 24, 2000 - 10:43 pm:

By Why bird on Tuesday, October 3, 2000 - 11:12 pm:

Why isn't popscene on the greatest hits album?

By Eddy on Wednesday, October 4, 2000 - 01:19 pm:

Because it's Blurs famous "lost single". It's not on the album, cos it is the one great Blur songs that is a mystery. Thats why it aint on there. Quite fittingly to.

By indigo on Wednesday, October 4, 2000 - 07:21 pm:

Fucking Charmless Man is on it instead of MOR! What fucking braindead focus group picked the songs! grrrrr

Having reconsidered the status of my bank account, I have decided not to buy The Best Of. I can live without the Wembley CD and I don't really need a second copy of all the songs. Oh well.

Hmm, was i just sensible? I will reconsider if I see it on CD WOW for £8.99

By Skrooie on Wednesday, October 4, 2000 - 11:07 pm:

I thought Alex said Charmless Man was chosen by the people above Popscene. 'Cunts', I distinctly remember him saying.

I don't rate MOR at all, I'd be quite happy to see that ditched.

Hawd on, I'm not buying that Best of pish, so why even comment ?? Duh.

Don't think I'll ever buy a best of again, since buying that Bowie compilation (yeah, I know, Eddy, but I bought it before you said not to...) It was completely shit !!

By indigo on Friday, October 6, 2000 - 05:52 pm:

I love my Bowie best of - but I like Hunky Dory just as much, if not more. Plus, the shitty little best-of I bought is made up of really good classics, then almost a third of shit 80s stuff that I really can't stand.

By chut on Friday, October 6, 2000 - 09:02 pm:

Consider yourselves lucky. I bought Outside, hahahahahaha.

About as good as the Sebadoh album I once bought, so imaginitive it was titled 'The Sebadoh' if I remember correctly. Still, at least both cd's were cheap, only now I know the reason.

By Arresting Occifer on Saturday, October 7, 2000 - 09:45 am:

Oh Eddy? A joke? I was under the common impression that jokes were meant to be funny. Nevertheless, what I really needed to express was my belief that your attitudes to music and music fandom are completely and utterly fatuous.

Must I remind you that music is an art? Must I also remind you that all appreciation of art is intrinsically subjective? Must I inform you that there is no good or bad, but merely what YOU like/appreciate and what YOU don't?

Don't eulogize yourself and don't insult others by pretending there is some kind of moral pecking order.

By Eddy on Saturday, October 7, 2000 - 01:31 pm:

For an "in" joke to be funny, you have to be in on it don't you Arresting Officer, therefore, cos you aint "in" on the joke you would not find it funny.

I must remind you that many see art as bollocks. Art is a loop-hole of a word/concept that arseholes (loosely) use to say that there is no good or bad, just "opinion". The people that use this idea, are lazy. Lazy cos that don't wanna ruffle some feathers by showing true understanding of what is good and what is shite. I also must inform you that in musical standards, the Beatles are good, no bad about them. Where as Tin Machine is bad, no question. So there IS a good and a bad in music, and in art.

And getting back to the Best Of. Bowie discussion, you obviously don't know the arse of the situation, so you canny comment with making any real effect on the whole subject.

I will always stick by what I said, a true music fan/completest, would go for the Bowie albums rather than a Best (Beast) Of. For us all to understand: Would you rather have the new Blur Best Of, or all of their albums??

Anyway, go and listen to your Soupdragons albums Officer.

Blur Best Of CD? Pah. Save your money and buy something better, like Live at the Budokan, or Bustin' and Dronin'. Or, if you have time to hunt around in dodgy record shops, the bootleg CD of their '95 Mile End gig.

And what does everyone think of the video for MIMR? (Sorry if this has already been asked on another topic but I've been away for two weeks and don't have to energy to catch up with what's been going on.)

Mr Eloquent "art is bollocks" Eddy -

Do you enjoy music? I do. I hope you do, after all, that is what music is all about, in my opinion. We even seem to enjoy the same kinds of music - amazing! Good stuff. The End.

Shame I'm not in the "in" group, though. Sniff. Its a damned shame really. You know I really wanna be in your "in" group Eddy, you know I really wanna so BAD and all. I don't feel good and comfortable unless I am in a big, strong group of blokes, you know. I need to be in a big, strong group of blokes who share "in" jokes that are FUNNY at the expense of innocent others!!! Big, strong groups of blokes rule!! FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY!!!

By Eddy on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 12:37 pm:

haha, actually, the "in" group has nothing to do with a group of blokes, and I cannot see why you have the inkling that I was getting at you for not being "in" with the joke, I was merely telling you the jist of the joke. The joke was shared between me and one girly. So, no group of blokes, not even big blokes.

The joke wasn't even at the expense of anyone. My my poor understanding.

By indigo on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 05:13 pm:

IAN - YOU BASTARD! I desperately wanted to go to the Oxford Zodiac and see JJ72, and I had to go to Hastings and see my bloody cousins instead! AAARGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, out of my system (not really, sobsobsob)
anyway, i now like MIMR, but THE VIDEO?!?!?!
What the hell? I really can't think of an adjective for 60s/mod skeletons dressed in body stockings, helmets and gaffa tape, doing an... interesting dance. However, we do see a little of the band which I suppose is good, and it's quite funny. Hmmm. It's memorable i suppose.

I am going to be strong and buy MIMR single instead of best of, even though I found it on cd-wow.com for £8.99 with no shipping costs. I may change my mind again later....

By Arresting Occifer on Wednesday, October 11, 2000 - 07:21 am:

Well Eddy, what can I say? I am disappointed that there is no big, strong group of big blokes that I could be ostracised from, that's a small letdown. I would have rather liked that, especially if they all played Rugby Union and cheered for the All Blecks. Go, go, go you All Blecks!

Ok, I apologise now for that lighthearted swipe at New Zealand males. It certainly wasnt warranted. I have met quite a few New Zealand males that I liked, even though one of them did insist on punching me in the side of the arm every time the All Blecks were victorious in a Test Match against the Wallabies. I didnt like that much. (The punching, not the rugby results) You wouldnt do that to me, would you Eddy?

By Lucky on Wednesday, October 11, 2000 - 12:10 pm:

Yes. And then you can stamp them and send them off to Tokyo.

By Eddy on Wednesday, October 11, 2000 - 01:36 pm:

I couldn't really give a toss about rugby and the All Blacks to the extremities of others. And I also have never had a sheep.

Probably one of the few people in this Cuntry who knows who Jesus and Mary Chain are.

So I really don't have any NZ characteristics.
