By ellie on Monday, April 9, 2001 - 08:06 pm:

ok, does nobody else think that this is the best film ever!and jamie bell is so lovely..if only he was a little older..nevermind, its still a bloody good film.

By Robbie Williams on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 12:52 am:

Billy. . .!?!

By me on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 06:19 am:

the best film ever is BLOW----everyone go out and see it!! its excellent!! Johnny Depp is absoloutly amazing! as is the rest of the cast-the soundtrack is great too---everyone go see it!

By St*Rsh*PeD on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 07:04 pm:

Best fims ever are, in a random list:

Labyrinth
Grease 2
Short Circuit
Teen Witch

No, I'm not kidding. Best cartoons ever were:

Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers
Heathcliffe and the Cadillac cats
Count Duckula
Teenage mutant HERO turtles (don't care what people say - in Britain the cartoon was "hero" and the movie was "ninja")

Anyway, thats all I can think of - anyone else got any lovely cartoon nostalgia to share?

By gfi on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 07:27 pm:

The cartoons from Hanna & Barbera are among the best ones!!! Jetsons, Flinstones, Scooby-Doo.....

By St*Rsh*PeD on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 09:19 pm:

What about Fingermouse, Trapdoor and Green Claws? These were also great....and Rude Dog and the Dweebs! How could I have forgotten that? (aside from the fact that it really wasn't that good). And er,..yeah - wasn't the best bit in greenclaws the bit when the big green thing opened the wee box containing the magic, glittery seeds? Awwww..that was all I watched it for. *sob*

By nat on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 09:39 pm:

ellie, there's another board, "the billy elliot brigade" or something. i think it's one of the most enjoyable films i've recently seen (not the best, but you get it). and i agree with you fully. (oh god, i'm gonna be like that old lady in detroit rock city with eddie f ur long)

but the kid that played the cross-dressing best friend was the loveliest. did he remind anyone else of jarvis cocker? mmm, dark 13 yr. old boys in dresses.......................

oh well, have a great day, everyone!
nat.

By Shaun Micallef on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 - 04:11 am:

HERO turtles?? You lot are so backwards!

By rob on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 - 01:57 pm:

Backwards? I guess we are the nation that is using instant access flight recorders in all your passenger jets to analyze problems with planes as they happen and solve the possible causes of plane crashes before they happen. And the county that uses black boxes that record only 6 items of data per second and can only finds causes of plane crashes by autopsy calls us backwards.

Ha.

By Si on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 - 09:08 pm:

Actually, the best cartoons were (The Mysterious) Cities of Gold, Ulysses and Superted (shut up).

I remember all the others though. They weren't bad, but just not as good. I was quite intrigued when I watched Count Duckula the other week, and realised only then that David Jason did the voiceover.

By Kenzie on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 - 09:12 pm:

Scooby Doo and Freakazoid

By Si on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 - 10:21 pm:

Freakazoid's too new. He's quite cool though cos he's nuts.

By lukas on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 03:18 am:

Freakawho?

My favorite cartoons were (no order):
transformers
cities of gold
dogtanian and the three muskerhounds
countduckula
every single roadrunner cartoon

By TobyZ on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 10:45 am:

Ahh Scooby Doo! Kenz, do ya remember the one with the abominable snowman? Classic.

But the old old Tom and Jerry's were the best. Can't be topped, not even by Scooby Doo or Ducktales.

By Ian on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 11:45 am:

CARTOON NOSTALGIA
Ahhhh....foaming at the mouth
Where do I start?
Dogtanian Mysterious Cities of Gold James the Cat Henry's Cat Defenders of the Earth Thundercats Pigeon Street Mask Transformers WHy did you start this topic my brain is melting Greenclaws was great Trapdoor Postman Pat Bertha Bagpuss is SO overrated I am thinking of making a site about this sort of thing but it wouldn't be as good as
www.80snostalgia.com
Go to 80s tv. Its great!
Best films ever- Trainspotting (The bit where Renton is really depressed and Sing is playing in the background is unmatched in cinema history) and Being John Malkovich.
Yesterday I read Camus' "The Outsider" and watched Taxi Driver for the first time- doing this will warp your mind.

By Ian on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 11:49 am:

PS- you MUST download the Dogtanian theme tune-

http://www.80snostalgia.com/classictv/dogtanian/sounds.html

YOU MUST ALL DO THIS NOW YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

By St*Rsh*PeD on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 06:19 pm:

In case anyone's interested, it was Teenage Mutant HERO turtles in Britain 'cos it was thought that "ninja" might make kids come across all violent or summat. I dunno. By the way, you can get loads of eighties cartoon themes from:
http://www2.wi.net/~rkurer/ttra80.htm and from
http://members.home.net3cpo/80sounds.htm

By Lucky on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 06:25 pm:

DANGERMOUSE!
And Pigeon Street and Barba Parpa and and and what was it called errrrrrrmmmmm... oh yeah Puff the magic dragon. Was that one mutha of a theme song or what? Oh, and I'M SHOCKED to see no one's brought up the Simpsons... Er, that could be cos you all think they're crap, but I reckon they're fantastical. Erm. I make my own adjectives. Yes.

By Kenzie on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 06:25 pm:

Of course I do. Da ya think I'm a pinko or something? : )

By St*Rsh*PeD on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 06:36 pm:

The Simpsons don't really count - I think its because I watch them so much now and that makes them feel kinda modern. Remember Banana Man? Fucking hell, that was weird. But, come on, we all know Chip 'n Dale's rescue rangers was the BEST. EVER. Heathcliffe comes close though, and Heathcliffe and Chip 'n Dale both had great theme tunes. Can't find the Chip 'n Dale theme tune anywhere - Napster does have it, but the version I got was some crazy one that was god awful. Anyone know where I can get it?

By Lucky on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 06:44 pm:

Chip chip chip chip and Dale... Is that how it went? Was there a little girl mouse in a purple jumpsuit?

By Candy Cane on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 07:00 pm:

rescue rangers.....

By St*Rsh*PeD on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 08:31 pm:

yes, that little girl mouse was Gadjet - and there was, er Montery Jack (?) and that stupid little fly. I know some lyrics from the verse! "...are slipping through the tracks, but these two, gum shoes, are picking up the tracks, theres no place to big, no place to small, if you need help just call..Chi.chi..chi..chip and dale, rescue rangers". Bloomin' heck I'm sad. Did anyone else think that Chip should have been dale and vice versa? You'd think that Chip would be the Hawaiin shirt chipmunk but nope, it was the other way around. Hmmmm....

By indigo on Friday, April 13, 2001 - 11:42 am:

I thought Chip was the hawaiian shirt one! Oh no! My fragile mind has been tipped over the edge!

Captain Planet, he's our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!

I had a video of Henry's Cat and Superted, I watched them nonstop for about 3 years. Fingermouse, Trapdoor and Green Claws were the best programmes ever, and Trapdoor has the best theme music beyond doubt.

Count Duckula was absolutely insane, Labyrinth is still the only film that truly scares me and Short Circuit was the first film to make me cry. How sad is that?!

By St*Rsh*PeD on Friday, April 13, 2001 - 07:37 pm:

I fucking loved Short Circuit - you can't buy it anywhere anymore, apparently it's no longer "on the shelves", which is shit because I haven't seen it for years and I loved it. Good old Johnny 5. Was anyone else addicted to movies in that they watched them practically every day? I did that with Grease 2, Labyrinth, Bugsy Malone and Weird Science. Oh, and both the Bill and Ted films.

I used to get so obsessed - for a while I was in love with Raphael from Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles AND Sonic the Hedgehog. I kid you not - I truly fancied them (Hey, i was only, like, 9!)

The first film that ever made me cry (that I can remember) was, er, a comedy. Drop Dead Fred, to be exact - the bit at the end where she finds her younger self all tied up. Brought a lump to my throat.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that I appear to have a lot in common with you Indigo - we share the same tastes! Awww...everyone else I know hated Labyrinth and Short Circuit. What did you think of Grease 2?

By nathallie on Saturday, April 14, 2001 - 01:10 am:

AH, LABYRINTH!!! oh the memories... i was 6 yrs old, and would go down to the private theatre in my building at showtime. it was horrifying, sitting in the little black room all alone. unfortunately, i've developed a minor fear of david bowie.... and muppets.

(and yeah, it was always so disorientating that chip wasn't the one with the red nose)

By nat again on Saturday, April 14, 2001 - 01:11 am:

i don't remember watching too many cartoons when i was little (i got into that stuff later), but my favourite shows were "mr. dressup" and "sesame street"... and i wore purple teenage mutant ninja sweatpants EVERYDAY in grade 2 (well, i wanted to wear them everyday...)

By indigo on Saturday, April 14, 2001 - 12:46 pm:

I was never that into Grease 1 or 2, although my little sister would have watched them every day so i know the entire soundtrack. I loved Bill and Ted, and for my 9th birthday, I actually had a Sonic the hedgehog cake! How cool is that! And I think I've blocked Drop Dead Fred out of my mind - it definitely made me cry or scared me, but the only scene I can remember is a weird dream like bit in the house near the end.

ahahaha! I just remembered about Beetlejuice! Oh, and there was a cartoon of it too! and Little Shop of Horrors!

By indigo again, caught up in chilhood retro sadness on Saturday, April 14, 2001 - 12:54 pm:

I was shit scared of David Bowie till I was about 13 and i realised that the bloke who was singing all the songs I loved on Hunky Dory and the manifestation of pure evil that stole little brothers and had haunted my childhood were ONE AND THE SAME PERSON. aaaah! i think this will contribute to years of therapy at some point in the future, especially since I saw "The Man Who Fell To Earth" and "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" at the tender age of 14.

I recently had to physically stop my uncle from buying his 4 year old son a copy of labyrinth, on the grounds that he is scared of Thomas the Tank Engine and will not be able to cope with freaky muppets and Bowie. On the same lines of really bad 80s films for kids, anyone see the Never ending Story? I hated that with a passion.

By TobyZ on Saturday, April 14, 2001 - 01:39 pm:

Starshaped, you can get Short Circut on DVD, maybe only in America though, haha.

"You're momma was a snowblower!"

By nathallie on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 12:44 am:

i remember seeing Never Ending Story Part 2 or something, in the sinny, very very young... i felt quite odd watching it, 'cos their land was so very much like the fantasy one in my head (you know, sometimes when you're a kid you think you really belong to some far-away planet with giant monsters and fairies and your the only one who can save the world?... no? sigh.)

have a great day!
nat.

By nat on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 12:46 am:

(btw - saving the human race from itself was the only way you could back to your own home... at least that's what i believed i had to do when i was 6-9 yrs old)

By TobyZ on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 12:47 am:

The world is full of giant monsters and fairies!

If anybody saves it, I hope it's you nat.

Anyone got alternatives for the lyrics (shagging everything with fur? If you had a chocolate bum?)

By St*Rsh*PeD on Sunday, April 15, 2001 - 09:34 pm:

Er, anyway, you can still get Short Circuit in America? That's so shit! Maybe we should start some sort of a petition over here, "Bring back Johnny 5" or something. I'm desperate to see that film, I loved Johnny 5 so much!

I used to love the Neverending Story, especially the music at the beginning - how great was that? One thing that did annoy me though - did anyone understand what Sebastian shouts at the end? Exactly what was his mother called? I could never understand what he yelled. Hehe - everyone used to get so upset when that horse died.

Indigo - that's pretty freaky, me and you could almost be one and the same person! Let's see - both big Blur fans (of course), loved Sonic, Bill and Ted,labyrinth...and the list goes on. Freaky.A lot of people at Blur chat have similar interests - maybe thats it! Blur attract certain fans who like certain things!

Or maybe I'm just talking shite...

By The Occifer on Monday, April 16, 2001 - 01:59 pm:

Just on the topic of Neverending Story...
You know that big, beautiful, white animal-thing? I can't really remember it's place in the plot, or what it gets up to, but I remember what it looked like. Anyway, I just had a rather jovial argument (don't ask me how the topic came up) about what this big, white beast was called. I said "The Love Dragon" and my friend said "The Luff Dragon". To settle a bet (ahem) could someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

By nat on Monday, April 16, 2001 - 04:10 pm:

thanks toby! (but i've accepted fate)

sorry occifer, i do not know...(good luck anyway)

By Lucky on Monday, April 16, 2001 - 05:38 pm:

I think it was the Love Dragon... What's the BEST EVER theme song from a cartoon then? My vote goes to Pigeon Street. "Here are the people who would share the sights the sounds the aaaiiirr..." EVERYONE SHOULD DOWNLOAD IT FROM NAPSTER! And delete it within 24 hours of course... ahem hem.

By ellie on Monday, April 16, 2001 - 08:08 pm:

oh my god, d'you remember the goonies, what a fucking fantastic film! I agree that us blur fans have the same taste-i was addicted to grease 2 as well, even although I knew it was shite.I was also addicted to drop dead fred, never ending story etc...oh i've just thought of something, does anyone remember a film called 'the challengers'?

By indigo on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 - 09:25 am:

Not especially, although I probably watched a bit of it - I have a family that loves films and the worlds shortest attention span, so i don't normally make it to the end. I watch most films in chunks (although when i was littler I was happy to spend ten or more hours watching the same film sometimes). This board is definitely like a collective of a certain group of people. Don't you find that people you get on really well with have something in common with you? I had exactly this conversation about 80s TV in a maths lesson (Oh my god, do you remember Batteries Not Included?) and all the people I get on with joined in, sighing about Green Claw and HeMan, whereas all the little bitches at the back just thought we were mad.

Its also really weird how the people that like one thing (erm, Blur?) like other similar things.

By St*Rsh*PeD on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 - 11:18 pm:

The big dog thing in The Neverending story was actually called the Luck Dragon, not luff or love. I was always put off by those big bubble wart things on its back though.

Did anyone hear about this thing with Ronan Keaton playing "Tender" on radio 1 or something, claiming he loves Blur? What a bastard! (Strange how you grumble that Blur don't get enough recognition, but when they do you wish they hadn't) Anyway, I think Ronan's just trying to sound all cool. Which he isn't. At all. Ever.

By Luk'as on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 01:46 am:

I heard it. It was ok. Nothing wrong with it just it seemed strange...

By indigo on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 09:42 am:

strange? it's the sort of thing that makes you doubt your own sanity. They keep playing some new Ronan video on MTV, and it just struck me that Ronan looks like a cross between Daniel O'Donnell and Shakin Stevens. If anyone on this board actually knows who either of these people are, i award you the prize for a wasted life.

I didn't mind the fact that Ronan did Tender... UNTIL NOW. I took one look at that mug of his and winced. Can't help it. Natural thing.

Seeing a plastic popstar like him ---> feeling nauseous ---> wincing

My chemistry teacher would be proud.

Everybody PLEASE PLEASE go to this site and vote for your favourite rock videos (u can do it as often as you like!) they have country House and Song 2, and a lot of other stuff. i am planning on watching the whole weekend of top 100 rock, and it would be so much better if Placebo, RHCP. manics, Blur etc got more votes than Limp Rizted and stuff like that.

http://www.mtv.co.uk/u-vote/

By St*Rsh*PeD on Thursday, April 19, 2001 - 11:16 pm:

Yeah, Weird science rocked Zach, except, come on now - the TV series better than the movie?! Are you kidding? The movie rocked and wyatt was sexy in the movie - not so in the TV series, plus Lisa turned into a total geek in the TV series.

By ZACH+----------- on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 12:56 am:

Well I saw the T.v Series befor i saw the movie so i guess it's just first impressions ya know.... Do you agree that this should be a topic all it's own?

By OutOfOrder on Friday, April 20, 2001 - 12:34 pm:

But as Jay in 'Dogma' says, the girl always wanted to get herself some but the guys in it were to moral for anyones liking, therefore making the film plus tv show a little bit shite.

Jay didnt say that, it was me paraphrasing his lines.

I used to love the goonies when i was a kid. I wanted to be that kid "mouth" when i first saw that.He was funny.
remember when he was showing that spanish womean around the house and he said "we keep the cocaine in the attic". Those wankers at ITV cut that bit out when it was the funniest bit.
