By Ian but don't lambast me lets put it down to a mixture of excitement because I'm about to become an adult and A-Level modular exam anxiety on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 07:00 pm: |
I see it in HMV every time I go in its there behind "The Great Escape" and its looking at me and saying "I would be a good choice of birthday present even though I cost £35 which is a lot for any CD but you want me nonetheless because you love Blur that damn much!" and I do I want it but how do ask my parents for it they don't understand my blur obsessiveness and will say "Don't you want a real present, it is your 18th after all" but I don't I must tell them...now...
Does anyone here have Live at the Budokan?
Also for my 18th I would like a bottle of Absinthe (for drinking) a dressing gown (for dignity) and an electric razor (for saving time).
Thank you for your time.
By Ian on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 07:01 pm: |
PS- If anyone could get me any of the presents listed above it would make me very happy.
By Chris on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 08:20 pm: |
I would consider myself a fan of Blur as far as one can be without buying anything they lend their name to, and have done very well without Live at the Budokan. As far as I can tell, it's just some live recordings - therefore the sound quality won't be as good as on their albums. It's also highly expensive. But hey Ian, if as Joe says your pocket money is equivalent to the economy of many African countries, that won't be a problem - go for it!
By Lucky on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 09:11 am: |
I've got it...
Nyaaahhhh!
It's pretty good, actually. Then only bad thing about it is that they've edited out the audience screaming during songs, so it sounds like they're playing in an empty arena. Then the squeals suddenly leap out of nowhere between the songs and just hit you in the face, which is most unpleasant. The sleeve's cool - Graham's wearing a Renny Klavitz Tshirt (oooo...) and Damon looks a bit like Gary Barlow in one of the shots... Oh, and the Universal sounds superb. GET IT, IAN.
By Ian on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 12:26 pm: |
Topsy-doozy!
Sorry, I'm a wee bit over excited after getting my A-Level modular results (V. Impressive)
I've just come home, no-one was in the house, so I did what any red-blooded male would do.
I stripped down to my underpants and "danced" to Soul Bossa Nova by Quincy Jones. Then I played For Tomorrow (Primrose Hill Extended) everyone should play this song at memorable points in their life- six minutes of music that no other band can ever touch.
I'm off now to burn my Russian and German History notes, which I will never need again!
Mwwaah-HaHa!
By sarah on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 01:14 pm: |
I've got my results too! Which means I'm off to university to do English - wooohoooo! I know some kill-joy peeps will now come and tell me how crap uni life is really, but do I care? Do I heck as like!
By Eddy on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 02:32 pm: |
Well Uni is a waste of time.
But Ian, you should buy Budokan, but, you will find that after a couple of listens, you won't need it anymore, and then listen to it very occassionally.
By sarah on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 02:40 pm: |
another thing: look in the nme this week and you will see that damon has been to mali playing with 'local musicians' as part of an oxfam project. also there are rumours of a damon solo album, which may or may not be reliable, but he definitely has been working with dan the automator. hope it's not some cod-reggae shit! oh well, thought i would let you know.
By Joe on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 05:57 pm: |
Well Ian, I believe you owe me some cash as I bet you £20 you'd do well, as I consoled you when you were close to tears after the British paper. you great poof.
I've agreed to play a gig on the Thursday before Reading, because a Record Company mogul will be there. Fame And Fortune is a stupid game I play.
By Ian on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 06:12 pm: |
Thats it! You pushed and you pushed...next time I see you, Joe...I'm gonna...playfully punch you in the gut! Nah!
By Chris on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 06:13 pm: |
I got my results as well today, and am going to Goldsmiths to do History! Huzzah! So, Ian was close to tears after the history paper? I know how he felt, it was the most gruelling experience of my life. That's why I'm getting sick of the press saying how easy the exams are. And do you what I'm really pleased about? The fact that I got better results than that arse-head Prince William, despite the fact that he's had the most expensive education money can buy. Oh well, I suppose as he's the product of 1000 years of inbreeding we can't expect him to be too bright can we?
By Ian on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 06:27 pm: |
Ha Ha! Brilliant Chris!
I must say I'm suprised they didn't rig the results for the little shithead.
A for European History
C for English History (I'll retake it in November)
But just to get one out of the way!
Yay!
By indigo on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 07:11 pm: |
Well done everyone! I'm just getting GCSEs next week but I've worked out they don't count for anything I care about - Thank God! I tried out my friend's patented learn everything the night before (or even the morning of) the exam technique. It was......unhelpful.
Shit, I'm taking "modern" history A-Level. What have I done? What have I done?!? 2 years on 18th and 19th century British politics! Damn you people that have already done it.
I was too cheap to buy Budokan so I recorded it off the most scratched CD you've ever seen (thankyou Wycombe library). It's very happy and off-key, but I'm missing the songs from Supa Shoppa onwards cos the CD just skipped.
By Kacy on Friday, August 18, 2000 - 01:51 pm: |
I love Live at the Budokan. It's got the greatest live version of For Tomorrow ever (and it's the extended version, too.) The guitar in it just makes me want to cry. The Universal sounds great too.
Actually, I was pleased that they edited out the crowd screaming. I always get pissed when you can't fully hear the music. Maybe they didn't edit it...I've heard that Japanese fans tend to be very respectful and quiet when music is being played.
By Ian on Friday, August 18, 2000 - 06:11 pm: |
Chris- could you give me some information on history at Goldsmiths- periods studied, entry requirements etc. This would be much appreciated.
By Chris on Friday, August 18, 2000 - 07:54 pm: |
Well Ian, it's much more a case of themes and ideas than periodization on the History course at Goldsmiths, there's a great deal of variety. The topics which caught my eye when leafing through the prospectus include African American History from slavery to civil rights, Revolutionary Britain 1776-1868, and Buddhist Asia: a cultural history. Although many of the topics are very broad, there are some more specific ones to do with cultural history as this is a speciality at Goldsmiths - Shakespeare's theatre, for example. In the third year you do a Special Subject at any college in the University of London, from a list of about 40.
The geographic range of topics is quite impressive, with topics related to the USA, Caribbean, Asia and Africa. In contrast, when I visited Cambridge I was surprised at how narrow the focus is, almost exclusively 19th and 20th Century British/European history.
The focus seems to be more modern than medieval (other than a compulsory medieval component in Year 1) and there is a bias towards cultural history - although there are plenty of topics on mainstream political and diplomatic history, my area of interest.
The entry grades are apparently BCC, but they just asked me for a C in History. It seems like a good institution, very nice campus, close to central London but not so pricey, and you get access to facilities like the Institute of Historical Research, the British Library, the University of London Library and the Public Record Office.
If you want to know anything else I suggest you visit the website: http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk
By Lucky on Saturday, August 19, 2000 - 09:33 am: |
Yeah, it's better that they edited out the screams during the songs, but it's a nasty shock when the song finishes and there's this high-pitched screech that goes right thru your head and rattles your teeth!
I heard this live version of Country Sad Ballad Man once, and the screams weren't edited out at all. In the middle of the song (the quiet bit when Graham plays those two wobbly high notes before the grand finale kicks in) some idiot screamed "Whoo hoo!". If you are reading this and you are that idiot, I'LL FIND YOU ONE DAY AND YOU'LL BE SORRY YOU EVER LEARNED HOW TO TALK. That was my favourite part and you spoiled it with your stupid Song 2, you piece of poisonous filth.
By Joe on Saturday, August 19, 2000 - 10:29 am: |
Sorry.
By Lucky on Saturday, August 19, 2000 - 02:15 pm: |
Ha ha, it was a girl.
Wellll I hope it was a girl.
By Eddy on Saturday, August 19, 2000 - 02:43 pm: |
So what's your point Lucky?? haha.
By Eddy on Saturday, August 19, 2000 - 02:48 pm: |
Hey, ah Joe. Are you goin' to college, or are you concentrating on the band??
By Ian on Saturday, August 19, 2000 - 06:04 pm: |
By the by, I am getting LatB for my birthday, do you know there are only officially FOUR copies left on sale throughout the country?
P.S- Eddy, tis Magic Night at my house on Tuesday!...I think.
By Lucky on Sunday, August 20, 2000 - 09:23 am: |
Ha ha, too right, Ed.
By Joe on Sunday, August 20, 2000 - 01:26 pm: |
Well...our gig on Thursday is being attended by some bloke from a record company, so who knows...we may even get signed and become famous before I even get as far as my A-level exams. I think if things were going well I'd definitely take a year off to see how things progressed...you can always go to college whenever you like. The band are getting much better, I'm writing the best stuff I've ever done and we're gelling fairly well....and we're all fairly ambitious.....it would be so nice just to go on a little tour with some other band...loverly.
By Eddy on Sunday, August 20, 2000 - 02:10 pm: |
Nice Joe, I see a collaboration between us on the horizon.
Ian- Magic night?? Is this to do with your week long partay??
By Lucky on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 09:07 am: |
Yes, Joe, get famous and play your choons in a bloody-great arena, where people pay £40 to see you. Who knows? Maybe I'll go to one of those gigs and screech "Whooo hoo!" in one of your more meaningful songs. I'll get you how you got me. Ooooh.
Of course, there IS the possibility of being pummelled to death by die-hard Sexy Breakfast fans...
By Eddy on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 02:48 pm: |
Sexy Breakfast is such a fucking good name.
By Joe on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 06:26 pm: |
Do you think? I think it's quite apalling...but anyway. If we DO get some sort of recording thing, or just record stuff with our own money, I'll send you a copy...but as it's hard enough getting everyone together for a practice this is about as likely as...ooh...going out with my best friend's sister.
By Joe on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 06:30 pm: |
Only because none of my friends have sisters....isn't that weird?
Ian's party does indeed commence on the morrow, however it is no longer week-long, merely night long. Should be fun....it's the Magic Theme so everyone has to do a trick if they want to get their hands on the best booze.
By Lucky on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 10:31 am: |
Well, I'll show you a disappearing trick if you give me the booze first. It'll be gone quicker than you can say Nondeplume! But you wouldn't want to say Nondeplume anyway, so why do I bother? Why oh why oh why?
By Ian on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 11:17 am: |
But the thing is...
a) We need to buy nasty booze for those who don't do tricks...
b) But why buy nasty booze when we can get nice booze for ourselves?
I have sewious weservations about this night of magic, Joe.
By Eddy on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 02:40 pm: |
Sadly, I canny be at the partay. And I should really call the cops, as you are all too young to drink, let alone buy it, haha.
Anyway, Joe, I love the name Sexy Breakfast so much, I would love to be a menmber. Anyway, I canny believe you can't get your band mates together. They need a kick in the arse.
Have a drink for us alll at the partay, (wow one whole night). haha.
Night.
By tam on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 06:31 pm: |
maaaaaaan can i come????!!!!!
By Ian on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 06:35 pm: |
Of course Tam, arrive at my house at 9pm sharp! And make sure you know a trick!
My trick is so cool, it involves coins, an envelope and my mind-reading skills.
By Chris on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 07:07 pm: |
Doh, I feel like such a hypocrite... there I was saying that it would absolute folly to buy Live At the Budokan, and I just ordered it on amazon.co.uk. However, it only cost me around £20 as I used a £5 gift certificate I got free in a magazine, and CDs are generally cheaper on there anyway. I hope it's as good as it's cracked up to be. And yes, Sexy Breakfast is a great name for a band. I'll never look at my cereal in the same way after hearing that name...
By tam on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 11:18 pm: |
i'm terribly excited!
By Lucky on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 07:56 am: |
Eurgh, that sounds kinda morbid, Chris. Ha Ha.
By Lucky on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 07:57 am: |
I mean, buying off Amazon?! My gawd, what were you thinking?...
By Chris on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 04:12 pm: |
If anything, I was thinking "hmmm, save £10, sounds like a good idea, but I'd better not make a habit of this". And do you know what the worst thing is? I don't regret it for a minute, haha.
By Ian on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 08:33 pm: |
Party was fun. Took ages to clear up endless cans and bottles. Pack now. Off to Reading tomorrow. Idlewild. Super Furries. Pulp. Beck. Primal Scream. Life. Is. Great.
By Joe on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 08:31 pm: |
Head difficult.
By Chris on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 10:05 pm: |
See you there Ian! (I don't mean that literally of course, it's just a way of saying I'm going too.)
By Lucky on Thursday, August 24, 2000 - 09:05 am: |
I hate you all.
Sigh. Have fun.
By Shaun Ryder on Monday, August 28, 2000 - 10:52 pm: |
I say
Happy birthday Ian
I hope you have a jolly good birthday and I wish you all the success with your exam results
Now suck ma sack an' get a top bird!
By Eddy on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 - 02:21 pm: |
If we notice above, Ians post was on August 23 2000, at 8.33pm. And Joes post was posted at 8.31pm on the same day. But, Ians post is above Joes.
Isn't that weird??
By tam on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 - 02:41 pm: |
ya pretty weird.
By Joe on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 - 07:18 pm: |
What I believe must have happened is I must have pressed Preview/Post message before him, but got waylayed with something else (probably Napster) and not actually posted it till after Ian. Probably.
And who knew Shaun Ryder was so nice?
By Ian on Wednesday, August 30, 2000 - 08:51 pm: |
Yeah, thanks Shaun. LatB arrived this morning, and I too am intrigued by the crowd noises. Muse's Matt Bellamy said something the other week about Japanese crowds going mental for about a second, and then shutting up for the whole song.
Fave track on CD? I think the version of Yuko and Hiro is laverly.
By Chris on Thursday, August 31, 2000 - 12:01 am: |
That's a coincidence, mine arrived this morning too. This Is A Low and Supa Shoppa (did I spell that right?) are good, I like them a lot. Oh, and I enjoyed the surprise instrumental of Brecht and Weill's 'Mack The Knife' from The Threepenny Opera. Maybe they included it because Damon and Graham apparently listened to Weill at school, and Damon won a music prize for his piano accompaniment to some Brecht play too.
By Eddy on Thursday, August 31, 2000 - 03:56 pm: |
Matt Bellamy needs a smack on the bottom.
By Joe on Monday, September 4, 2000 - 09:45 pm: |
I'd administer it quite happily.

"Live at the Budokan" is a top CD with great versions of the Universal and For tommorow as well as Poscene. The best bit though is Damon forgetting the words in Parklife with "And its not about you joggers, cause jogging is (Not quite sure)"
