ok, this is the no. 7 theory - on most albums, not just Blur albums, track 7 is usually a great song! For example: Leisure - Theres no other way,. MLIR - Chemical world, Parklife - The debt collector (well, its quite good), The great escape - The universal, Blur - Your so great, and 13 - Battle. Other albums by other bands also show this trend - is there a secret no. 7 conspiracy going on?
By Bea on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 09:11 pm: |
well, number 7 is actually my favourite number...
could they do that to please me?
*giggles*
By Eddy on Thursday, February 22, 2001 - 12:43 pm: |
This is a very good topic. Number 7 is very good on albums. Funnily enough Brett Anderson seems to think the same as we do, see Q's Cash For Questions, published many moons ago. Although apply the same rule to Suede albums and it just doesn't work. Strange yeah??
By Dooglebug on Thursday, February 22, 2001 - 02:15 pm: |
No not really.
I remember having a drunken conversation along similar lines except we were building up the cause of Song Number 4's.
By St*Rsh*PeD on Thursday, February 22, 2001 - 06:15 pm: |
Brett Anderson already said that? Bloody hell! I thought I'd found it out...damn.
Anyway - think about it this way - the no. 7 rule could apply to albums, and if thats true, Blur's next studio album will be their 7th meaning it'll be their best. Heres hoping...
By Joe on Saturday, February 24, 2001 - 05:06 pm: |
I've thought this for years, and come up with an interesting theory...
On lots of vinyl (and cassettes for that matter), track 7 is the opener to side B, so bands put a really good track on like they would at the start of the album. With the advent of CDs, this no longer matters, but as the theory has slowly crept into the collective thinking of the music making massive, the tradition is perpetuated.
By Eddy on Sunday, February 25, 2001 - 01:09 pm: |
You've hit the button with that one Joe. Well done sir.

I was out at the pub, after I scored 7 straight goals in a football match yeah, and some sod wearing a teeshirt with '7' on it came up and started causing hassle between me and my mates, suggesting that he actually preferred Robbie Williams cover of 'Song 2' to the original. That was FIRST, yeah - then second, he says Joy Division are a load of shite and that 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' ain't a classic film. I nearly glassed the bastard. But then I started a conversation with one very sexy bird, who says to me I look like that bloke from Shed 7. This, I hope, is total crap. Not that Shed 7 are so shite, but I don't look anything like that bloke (but then I never really pay any attention to blokes looks). Rick Witter? None shitter, as the NME put it.
But I only just noticed how much the number 7 figured in this equation. Damned weird.
Nice one mate.

erm, twice.
and is something wrong with hotmail these days?
please help me, i am a sad case indeed.
By indigo on Thursday, March 1, 2001 - 10:51 am: |
erm, three times actually. dont worry nat! i am at home from school with a sore throat - fortuitously missing a mock A level statistics exam that i am going to have to do tomorrow instead. nothing is wrong with hotmail, but my cat is sneezing on the computer screen.
By Lucky on Friday, March 2, 2001 - 05:48 am: |
I had a sore throat too, but it's turned into a cold. Isn't it supposed to happen the other way round?
By indigo on Friday, March 2, 2001 - 10:39 am: |
Poor Lucky! well, I am at home again, and the sore throat is still here, I have massively swollen glands and a really horrible sounding cough.I'm always getting bloody sore throats - I blame the fact i had my tonsils taken out when i was 4.
i'm to tired to go through all my cds and disprove the number 7 theory, so i think i'll just agree.
By morgan on Friday, March 2, 2001 - 01:33 pm: |
The number 7 theory can't be more true. It certainly is for Travis- 'The Man Who'.
It didn't work out to its best for Suede- 'Head Music' though.
By St*Rsh*PeD on Friday, March 2, 2001 - 08:27 pm: |
Thats strange - I didn't think even a number 7 track would give Travis a good song.
By kacy on Saturday, March 3, 2001 - 04:37 am: |
Ha ha ha...I do agree with Damon's comments on Travis - pleasant enough but not very interesting or exciting. "cheese on toast" was one of Dames' better obtuse metaphors.
By indigo on Saturday, March 3, 2001 - 09:54 am: |
now, I happen to think cheese on toast is very exciting, if only because the last time I cooked it I set the grill on fire.
By Lucky on Sunday, March 4, 2001 - 06:32 am: |
Ha ha.
I used to think it was the number 11s that were great, but then I realised that it didn't really balance out...
Leisure - Birthday
MLIR - Villa Rosie
Parklife - Trouble in the Message Centre
The Great Escape - Ernold Same
Blur - Look Inside America
13 - Trimm Trabb
Maybe it's because I love Trouble in the Message Centre and Trimm Trabb too much.
By Toby on Sunday, March 4, 2001 - 01:10 pm: |
11's are usually crap, but then there's exceptions like "There's No You" on Tin Planet.
By Eddy on Sunday, March 4, 2001 - 01:18 pm: |
Villa Rosie is very close to being the best on MLIR. No actually Turn It Up is the best.
By Toby on Sunday, March 4, 2001 - 01:52 pm: |
I'd argue that Blue Jean or Colin Zeal (I'd love a really angry live accousic version) were the best, but I'm too busy and smashed listening to the Replacements (sorry, you all probably hate the Replacements) to double check.
By St*Rsh*PeD on Sunday, March 4, 2001 - 05:18 pm: |
I love Intermission and Commercial Break - they sound great on their own at the end of a mixed tape (that's a tip folks, write it down)
By kacy on Monday, March 5, 2001 - 03:08 am: |
I DID put intermission on the end of one of my tapes actually. And Lucky, I love all those #11s with the exception of Ernold Same. Trouble...has to be one of the best songs ever. In fact I'm Napsterizing a live version right now...
By indigo on Monday, March 5, 2001 - 05:27 pm: |
I love all the number 11s too! and intermission!
toby - tin planet? "there's no you" really pisses me off to an incredible degree. i used to like space (i even started a website years ago! zip.to/spacezone) but i have never heard of the replacements.
By Toby on Monday, March 5, 2001 - 05:38 pm: |
????????????????????
How do you go from being a big enough fan to start a bloomin' website, to now being pissed off by them? And does that mean that, even though you like blur NOW, one day you'll be throwing rocks at Damon as he walks down the street?
By St*Rsh*PeD on Monday, March 5, 2001 - 08:14 pm: |
I wonder if Damon DOES get rocks thrown at him in the street. How mortifying for the poor lad. Ah well, he can always retaliate with those planks of wood which he apparently took with him after threatening the photographers. Damon knows how to protect himself y'know.
By Prissy on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 12:51 am: |
No, he DOESN'T. Know how to protect himself, I mean. Haven't you had a close look at Damon's delicate mittens? They bruise real easy. Real easy.
By indigo on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 08:54 pm: |
toby - i didnt say Space piss me off, just that that particular song is one of the worst on that album. I hadnt actually thought about space for months, but this morning I woke up sing "Begin Again". That is definitely the best song on Tin Planet.

By indigoe on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 05:36 pm: |
you are correct my dear lucky - mwahahahaha!
