Musical Metaphors for Pleasure and Profit

Coping: Blur general: Musical Metaphors for Pleasure and Profit

Spurred on by Ian's fantastic cheese metaphor for Blur and Oasis I'd like to create a little forum here for people who feel the need for music journo wankery.

OK.

Think of the musical climate in the past few years as being Germany in the years of hyperinflation. Before, the great Streseman managed to keep Germany on its feet, just like Blur managed to get to numbe rone with Beetlebum. After the fall of Streseman, the country turned into a barren economic climate, the only governing forces in music staying for about two weeks until another election is called, and they go. This carries on for several years. Then as people become more and more sick of it two new forces come onto the scene...cerebral post-Britpop in the shape of JJ72, Muse, any other good indie band at the moment, and they're like the communists, and are fairly popular. The other group have a leader who is so full of shit it's untrue and provide fast, idealistic answers. Fred Durst, you are our musical Hitler. And the people are loving it. Just wait till he invades Poland. Then you'll see.

So where do the likes of cruddy Coldplay go? Are they like the Social Democrats, or the Centre Party?
And the Gestapo must be Blink 182...rounding people up and turning them in to braindead buggershrews.

Wasn't Streseman spelled Stresemann? Or did I just fuck up my essay on pre-war Europe? I never know how to spell names.

This really hasn't kicked off in the way I hoped it would.

So, in theory, one of two things should happen at this point. Either the old guard rises up to steady things (REM, U2, blur) or a new regime takes over and becomes the new old guard (Coldplay).

Here's hope to REM and blur, because frankly the new U2 blows (Beautiful Day is the exception). The fact that the new U2 album has sold so many copies and won awards is a testament to how sad things are in the Supermarket Music Industry.
