Does anyone know what room Alex had at Goldsmiths College? It is quite plausible that I will study History at Goldsmiths and if so I must have his room and lick it and turn into him only when he was young and sexy.
By indigo on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 06:47 pm: |
How cool would that be? I am desperate to go do history of art at Goldsmiths but my parents have FORBIDDEN me. I have to apply to Warwick, Cambridge etc. AARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
shit i think sixth form pressure is getting to me
By Joe on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 08:00 pm: |
Tell your parents that they can fuck right off because it's your life and not theirs. That's so out of order. I'd be well cross. But Cambridge should be fun too...what are you wanting to study?
In other news Weatus have gone in at number 2, not managing to knock Atomic Kitten off from the top spot. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
By Out_Of_Order on Monday, February 12, 2001 - 09:18 am: |

Wheatus?! Fucking Wheatus?! dear god no!!! Why does the british public have to be brainwashed by all this "Nu-punk rock" shite, or whatever the hell its called?! fuck off wheatus!!! and you blink 182...bastards.
On a strange note though - has anyone noticed the guy who looks suspiciously like toadie from "Neighbours" in the background in the wheatus video? My god! What is the coolest lawyer this side of Western Africa doing in a wheatus video?! Someone please explain this to me - I can't watch Toadie's crazy escapades with Lance in the same way anymore! Noooooooooo!

Goldsmiths isn't "academic" enough according to my parents. I'm still going to apply though, becuase hardly anywhere closeish does art history, and I think the only one my parents would be happy with is bloody Cambridge! I'm meant to be looking up universities, open days etc at the moment, but I really have no idea what i want to do....
god this is a dull post isnt it? lets liven it up with some thoughts about what Alex must have been like as a student..... mmmmmmmmmm.
By Chris on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 - 03:35 pm: |
Goldsmiths not academic? They should try doing history there like I'm doing. It's a heavy workload and is by no means an 'easy ride'. Perhaps when they say "academic" they mean "stuck in the 1930s" like Cambridge...
By indigo on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 - 04:56 pm: |
yeah probably. im looking at york at the mo, that seems pretty good - but far away! (yes, i am one of those wusses who'll go home every weekend with the washing). One of my best mates going to Edinburgh, and another ones going to brighton, so ill probably be travelling a lot anyway.
Anyway, is this like the goldsmiths board or what? is it a subtle influence from our shared love of Alex?
By Joe on Thursday, February 15, 2001 - 09:55 am: |
Well firstly Chris I think that is the argument of a typical anti-Oxbridge student...just because we have nicer buildings does not make us prehistoric. And Goldsmiths is fine - probably no better or worse, and it can be hard to get into, expecially for an arts subject. They've offered me 3 B's, which is fairly high. So everyone just...be nice.
By indigo on Thursday, February 15, 2001 - 07:09 pm: |
chiiiiiiiill
i think im just going to apply everywhere and make my mind up later - if anywhere will have me!

Joe old son, I've been to Cambridge - Emmanuelle College - on a visit and spoken to several admissions tutors for their history degree. I was very disappointed with the course, which seemed to be focussed mainly on traditional political and diplomatic history, with little thought given to the use of other disciplines such as sociology or literary analysis. And my views on Cambridge as a bastion of traditionalism are well-founded when so many of its students have been taught at arcane public-school institutions. There is limitless anecdotal evidence of people like me from comprehensives being unable to fit in. And I wasn't aware there is such a thing as a 'typical anti-Oxbridge student'. However, the admissions tutors spoke at length of their 'ideal applicant' which suggested to me that diversity is not welcomed or valued.

My Dad used to work at Cambridge as a lab technician or something and said he got a lot of hostility from the students who felt they could treat him as inferior. But hey, it was the 70s, and I would have been well chuffed to get into Cambridge regardless of course.
The college I visited (Queens) had quite a varied course and I didn't come across anyone who seemed to put me off applying- maybe it differs by College.

thats one thing in cambridge's favour - the corn exchange and the junction. york is about an hour away from ANY decent concerts (they boasted that Space had once played a gig 30 minutes away! wow!)
