Coping: Blur general: Mark Greaney, Skinny Wrists, £1.50 per pint of Carling, Fights with Metallers, Radio 1....
By Joe on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 - 10:10 pm:

Me and the sadly absent Ian went to see the fabulous JJ72 last night at Oxford Brookes, and took full advantage of the £1.50 per pint Carling, getting absolutely ratarsed. After standing politely through Starsailor (like the Verve only funnier), Alfie (like Gorky's Zygotic Mynci only less funny) and Amen (like smashing your head open with some glass, only less pleasant) the fantastic saviours of indie took the stage and we shook like Tickle-Me Elmo's until the end. It was superb.

After the gig we took our shirts off to steam and the guy from Radio 1 comes up and asks us to do an interview, a debate between us and the Amen fans, which we did! It was great, they came over like complete fuckwits and we came over like to remarkably intelligent, if completely ratarsed young men. After that we got a kebab from this Kebab Shop where we all pretended to be Louis Theroux.

Beat that for a night out!

By Joe on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 - 10:11 pm:

Oh yeah and Ian finished the interview by saying "One last thing, Mark Greaney: Skinny Wrists, and with that I finish the interview!" Genius!

By Jenna on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 - 11:57 pm:

Hey-- I was just going to write and ask if there were any JJ72 fans on the board, but it looks like someone beat me to it. While we're all waiting for a new Blur album to come out (why's it taking them so long this time around? too many side projects?) it's nice a good new band came along to get excited about. I wish I could see JJ72 on the NME tour, but I live in America. Joe--
Are you from Oxford? I might be working there this summer. I hope so. I'd love to get out of not so magic America!

By that guy who on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 - 11:58 pm:

I heard that. It was a cool interview. The ending was the best bit.

By R~S~P on Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - 12:24 pm:

Did you notice that all the Amen fans appeared to be either a) about fourteen years old, or b) about 26 stone? When we saw the gig at The Foundry in Sheffield, my friend Lee upset Amen by firstly asking the singer if 'Casey Chaos' was his real name, and then shouting the lyrics from 'Cat's in the cradle' at the drummer, who used to be in Ugly Kid Joe. Good fun had by all.

One more thing.. Did Hilary smile at all during the gig? Cos she seemed really miserable when we saw them. Some people have no idea how to enjoy themselves....

By nittaya on Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - 05:36 pm:

ha ha, joe, sounds like you guys had a spectacular time! i don't get the last bit, about ian's signing off (btw, is he every coming back?), and wish i understood more (never heard of any of those bands, besides the verve, and i've got "oxygen"...) sigh, jenna, i'm with you, but not so much so

By Joe on Thursday, February 1, 2001 - 10:03 pm:

Yeah, she smiled...she's a happy bunny now. We met them before the gig and Hillary was quite smily and polite, Fergal was an absolutely lovely bloke and only Mark seemed surly. But it just made him seem more magical....sigh.

By indigo on Friday, February 2, 2001 - 06:06 pm:

oh i love jj72!!

one of the things that i am most pissed off about is that circumstances conspired against me and i have missed 3 opportunities to see them (a holiday, being grounded and being under 18). AAAARRGGGHHH! I just want to see them and sing along!

When my mate went to the siging in the summer at Virgin megastore, she goes "oi, Hillary, draw a happy face cos you never bloody smile". Apparently everyone was mortified, including Hillary.

oh god im SSSOOOOOOO jealous!!!!

By Joe on Saturday, February 3, 2001 - 08:20 pm:

I think Mark's broken up with his beloved Catherine, if you interpret his response to Q's questioning in the new issue. Maybe that accounts for his grumpiness...but yeah, they're incredibly good. Really simple songs, going straight to the point. Fantastic.

By Eddy on Sunday, February 4, 2001 - 02:16 pm:

I don't mean to be rude but although JJ72 are alright in a way, they are pretty cold shit, but I'm sure good live.

If you wanna listen to JJ72 just buy a Joy Division record and speed up the vocals.

In a year it'll be JJ Seventy...who??

By Joe on Sunday, February 4, 2001 - 05:49 pm:

All lies Eddy....all lies.

By Kyle on Monday, February 5, 2001 - 12:25 pm:

I gotta side with Eddy on this one.

By Eddy on Monday, February 5, 2001 - 02:19 pm:

Yeah thank God, it's about time someone sided with me.

Kyle, respect man.

By nathallie on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 01:14 am:

argh, kyle beat me. (hate hate hate). d/l some stuff, it's okay. not gonna go crazy over it. and EDDY... what is the adjective for a new zealander? (i KNOW i've asked this before, but someone please goddam fuckin answer me --> *as polite as possible* thanks)
have a great day!
love, nat.

By Eddy on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 12:44 pm:

I think it's "cunt" Nat.

By Kyle on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 02:43 pm:

I apologise for my speedy response Nathalie, I'm sure we can both agree with Eddy however. Here's a hint; tell him you like Big Star.

By indigo on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 06:10 pm:

Eddy - oh I give up!

By Kiwi on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 06:42 pm:

I think that's it, Miss Nat.

By thank you from nat on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 08:39 pm:

big star? are they the one with the song that goes "i'm an adult now... " (i don't look at girls anymore, 'cos then people will think i'm a pervert... i date women...) ?

By Joe on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 09:09 pm:

Well, if that's the way you swing Nat then I'm up for taping it!

I don't believe I just wrote that.

By Kyle on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 - 12:23 pm:

You're very welcome Nathalie. Don't recognise those lyrics however. But then I never listen to words in songs - wrong of me, I know.

By nat oh shoot i've blown my cover on other posts on Thursday, February 8, 2001 - 09:01 pm:

lol, joe, sorry...
(just that i like that song, and it's by star something or other)

By Bree on Friday, February 9, 2001 - 01:46 pm:

Look Nat, Marie said you're a prostitute, so I'm not interested in you're comments.

By not telling you to fuck off 'cos i'm sure you've heard it all before... on Friday, February 9, 2001 - 11:30 pm:

alright, thanks bree! i love you too darling
-and i know you don't care, but marie's pretty lovely too-
have a great day anyway!
the oh-so-uninteresting nat

By Bree on Saturday, February 10, 2001 - 07:45 am:

don't you dare judge me. fuck you, you slobbering cow.

By ANDY on Saturday, February 10, 2001 - 06:32 pm:

Im getting fucking pig sick of you,Bree.Go and do something usefull, like maybe learn some respect, manners, and above all-wit.I think everyone has the right to judge you, because it`s that fucking obvious that your a fucking slag. Now unless you have an extremely small vocabularly, try and post something usefull and interesting. So stop slagging people off,and let them do as they wish, cuz at the moment you seem to be acting like a fly around a cows asshole-i.e constantly around when your not pissing well wanted.Goodbye!

By nat with a lovely new haircut on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 12:56 am:

WAS there any judging going on? sigh, i'm just wondering who you REALLY could be, my little bree-monger...

By ...and don't reply with on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 01:02 am:

... 'cos that doesn't take a quick mind to come up with. come on... SOCK IT TO ME!

By Lucky... sock? on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 11:50 am:

Remember those old Batman shows...
POW!
SOCK!
KABOOM!

By Ian on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 02:09 pm:

It won't be "JJ Seventy-who?" in the future because they are clearly going to become the band who are really cool to name drop (Pixies...Joy Division etc). In the future people will whip out JJ72 and listen to it and go "They were years ahead of their time" (as were Joy Division, in fact). And , if there is any justice, "Leisurenoise" by Gay Dad will also be top of the cool brigade. Give it a listen! They have a poor reputation but they rock...Come back Cliff Jones.

Did anyone see Mark on TOTP wearing long sleeves to cover up his skinny wrists?

By indigo on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 06:43 pm:

yeah! oh, he was so angsty, screaming his heart out like an off-key angel! he looked like hed borrowed his big indie brother's shirt or something - and while im on vacuous and shallow gossip about image, what had hillary done to her hair? crimped goth? undecided if i like it....

haha didnt fergal look pissed off with jayne middlemiss standing next to him going "ahlright, eets the jj72s!"

By Joe on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 08:08 pm:

Is Jane Middlemiss Mexican now? And Hilary's hair is a bit of a fright - look in this months Q for more frightfulness. Wasn't it a great TOTP? Thhe Manics, Ash, JJ72...pretty frickin good.

By Eddy on Monday, February 12, 2001 - 12:16 pm:

haha JJ72 will never be name dropped with the likes of Joy Division and the Pixies. That is fucking absurd.

They are just a Burke and Hare band, check "Long Way South", drums nicked from the grave of Ian Curtis. Great bassist though, should get her tits out more, then I'd buy the album.

But having said that, Gay Dad are the most underated band of the last few years. Every song on Leisurenoise is worthy of a #1. I here the next album is to be called "Modern Life Is Rubbishnoise".

Pick for 2001: Starsailor and Crashland.

By indigo on Monday, February 12, 2001 - 10:52 pm:

so i cant type a fucking newcastle accent...

I still havent' managed to hear Starsailor yet!

By The Occifer on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 - 07:57 am:

Hey Kyle, I just read A Clockwork Orange. And I saw Mystery Train by Jim Jarmusch, though not Down By Law. I didnt realise that he made Night On Earth though. I also didnt realise he made Ghost Dog. Fuck man, he also made Year of the Horse. And he's mates with Tom Waites. The things you learn in the space of two hours!

I like him now, but I'm still half-hearted towards his films.

By BakeSale on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 - 02:09 pm:

I wasn't aware I had such a huge influence over you, Occifer. Sounds like an eventful 2 hours anyway.

By nittaya on Friday, February 16, 2001 - 09:03 pm:

must...not....admit...but... ARGH! have to admit a mind that's slowly changing... after a few weeks:
"october swimmer" is rapidly growing in like.
"oxygen" is still something i'm not very keen on, but "snow" is slightly better.
any songs i should check out?

clockwork orange is great. right up there with "pride and prejudice" as my favourites.
the movie sucks royal ass though. (good comparatively to its genre of art, but not to the imagination)

By The Occifer on Saturday, February 17, 2001 - 08:32 am:

Kubrick's version is one of the few films adapted from books that I actually prefer in celluloid rather than paperback. But you must give respect to the author of course. It's his creation.

By Joe on Saturday, February 17, 2001 - 08:21 pm:

Have you tried it in hardback?

And I think Jurassic Park was better as a film. But has anyone seen the film version of A Room With A View? Fucking terrible.

By Ian on Sunday, February 18, 2001 - 02:11 pm:

Crashland? Saw them last year. Hardly worth getting excited about, unless you really like the sound of seventh-rate Supergrass tribute bands.

By Eddy on Sunday, February 18, 2001 - 02:15 pm:

JJ72 are piss mate. Joy Division with double speed vocals.

Crashland- better than the Beatles.

By indigo on Sunday, February 18, 2001 - 07:44 pm:

the shining was better as a book than as a film.

on good JJ72 songs - all of them (but the one that starts "pasta machine broke down" is a bit iffy)

By BakeSale on Monday, February 19, 2001 - 12:05 pm:

The movie version of Fight Club is better than the book.

By stereopop on Monday, February 19, 2001 - 03:28 pm:

Yeah, the movie version has Brad Pitt in it. :) Hehe ...

By rachel on Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - 08:08 am:

and Edward Norton.

By someone on Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - 09:46 am:

Stephen King disliked the movie version of his book, The Shining so much he actually went out and made his own film of it. I've not read the book but the original version of the film is better than the King version.

By oldie on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 - 09:48 am:

What's wrong with skinny wrists? I like skinny wrists.

By indigo on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 - 04:41 pm:

we all like skinny wrists.. especially on Mark Greaney.

By Joe on Tuesday, May 8, 2001 - 01:27 pm:

I'm so glad this topic has come back. I might start contributing again. Or not.

By carmelita on Saturday, May 12, 2001 - 02:04 am:
