Ok, so maybe a boring topic, but I am so goshdarned bored I'm gonna give you my top 5 anyway!
1- Radiator (Super Furry Animals)
2- 1977 (Ash)
3- Fuzzy Logic (Super Furry Animals)
4- The Bends (Radiohead)
5- Bring It On (Gomez) OR BloodSugarSexMagik (Red Hot Chili Peppers) OR Dig Your Own Hole (Chemical Brothers)
Of course none of these compare to the glory of MLiR, but Radiator is almost (but not quite) as glorious.
What albums have wetted my whistle this year, I hear you not cry?
How about Idlewild's "100 Broken Windows" and Super Furry Animals's "Mwng".
Sorry, I am soooooo bored.

my favorite album of all time might be jeff wayne's war of the worlds.
There are other albums I like better at some times but I think that one wins on an averaging out type of thing...
By Joe on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 - 12:39 am: |
Hee....
I think mine would be (in no order of preference):
OK Computer - radiohead
Radiator - sfa
This Is Hardcore - pulp
Hunky Dory - God
And....er....gosh. Dunno. Er...
Ummmmmmmm.....er.....
Space?
Only kidding.....er...I'm really finding this tough. I wouldn't say Showbiz because it's too new, and only has limited appeal, unlike the others...and I don't want to repeat bands...I might have said a Kula Shaker one last year, not today however....all the other albums I can think of are good in their own way but nothing that I should feel warrants a top five placing, so I'm contemplating on writing something ironic like Ace Of Base or Space or anything that rhymes with Ace in fact.........oh gosh..Er.....ok.
The Final Album Has Not Yet Been Written Because I Will Write It..This May Seem Egotistical But You Don't Have To Like It, I Do, And If I Didn't There'd Be No Point.
Phew.

At the moment...
1. Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
2. XTRMNTR - Primal Scream
3. Closer - Joy Division
4. In It For The Money - Supergrass
5. Attack Of The Grey Lantern - Mansun
By Bea on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 - 08:52 am: |
Hmmm... mine would be (yes, at the moment, very well said Thurston), in no order:
- Aion: Dead Can Dance
- Strategie de la Rupture: Wim Mertens
- His 'n' Hers: Pulp
- Stone Roses: Stone Roses
- Suede: Suede (boy, all these guys have great imagination for first album titles...)
They may change tomorrow... according to what I feel...
By sarah on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 - 11:28 am: |
Pulp: Different Class
Suede: Dog Man Star
The Smiths: The Queen is Dead
Radiohead: The Bends
The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground and Nico
SFA: Radiator
OK, that's 6, but who's counting... I can't really choose a Bowie album, because I like tracks of different ones, so I'd include a Bowie Best Of, but that's probably cheating.
By Eddy on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 - 03:03 pm: |
This is a fucking great topic. Our very own chance to be music wankers.
And looking at most choices, it shows we are all very young indeed.
For me,
MC5- Back In The USA
Joy Division- Closer + Unknown Pleasures
Jam- All Mod Cons
Mansun- Grey Lantern
Blur- All
Billy Bragg- Life's A Riot.....
Pixies- Doolittle
Bowie- Diamond Dogs + Low
Grateful Dead- Workingmans Dead
Rolling Stones- Sticky Fingers
Love- Forever Changes
Roxy Music- For Your Pleasure
Black Grape- Great When Ya Straight.... Yeah
No doubt I'll add more when I remember more.
Nice choices Thurston.
But, just to add my 2 cents, The Velvet Underground are the biggest load of shit ever. Nico is a shocking album with about 3 good songs. It seems that the music press has told the world that it is good, but it is shite. And many peeps fail to realise that the album paved the way for shit bands to be accepted into the world. Can anyone tell me what is so good about this album please?? (No malice intended for you Sarah, your entry just reminded me of them).
By Eddy on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 - 03:16 pm: |

Pink Floyd- Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

*The Bends - Radiohead

1)Moseley Shoals (Ocean Colour Scene)
2)THis is Hardcore (Pulp)
3)The Menace (Elastica)
4)Fin de Siecle (Divine Comedy)
5)Automatic For the People (REM)
And a new entry on my playlist, Eternal Nightcap by the Whitlams, an amazing Aussie band that Cassy kindly recommended to me. Cheers gal!
And in case anyone's worried, the word "Moseley" is not a reference to the 1930s fascist leader but the town where Ocean Colour Scene are from. (I wasn't going to buy the album until somebody assured me that the band don't actually have far-right tendencies.)

Deserves credit for name-checking "The Family Ness" though.
I have always thought that "Let It Be" was a damn good Beatles album as well and often criminally ignored.
It looks like a Pulp/Radiohead showdown at the moment, with SFA bringing up the rear...

Kula Shaker were so very poorly treated. Sure Crispian was a rich kid, but it wasn't like "Mummy buy me a rock band", when seen live they rocked with the best of them and wrote some glorious numbers such as Hey Dude, 303 and Great Hosanah.
For more information on Kula Shaker contact your local library. Unless you're the bloke who keeps posting all this shite up, in which case stick your finger up your arse.

Hey Ian, Kula Shaker were treated the same way the Sheds and Sleeper were. Now can you see where I am coming from?? All great bands of their time.
Btw, does anyone cept me and Skroo like any bands that were around pre 90's??
By Kacy on Monday, August 14, 2000 - 02:44 pm: |
Yeah!
70s and 80s produced some greatness, to be sure.
The Jam, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, X-Ray Spex, The Clash.
And before that there are the immortal Beatles...they are glorified a bit too much I think, but Revolver is AMAZING.
By spacegirl on Monday, August 14, 2000 - 05:11 pm: |
I wasn't around pre-90's.......
well 1984 anyway. Although I have developed a love of Bowie thanks to my dad, I also know the words to every song by the Cranberries, Eddie Reader and Roxy Music (thanks so much mum). I HATE MY ENTIRE EXPERIENCE OF THE 80S!
By Ian on Monday, August 14, 2000 - 09:58 pm: |
No, I refute. Kula Shaker were tops. Shed Seven and co were treated poorly because they were complete b...gah, Ok Ian, stay cool, big open fields, agree to disagree...we can all say what we want, no matter how controversial...
The problem with liking bands pre-90s for me is that I feel some people may go out and buy, say, a Pixies album 'cos they've been mentioned in NME, and buy it to look all crazy and diverse when in fact that don't even like it. I know I will offend many here but I could not bring myself to buy a Smiths album because I really don't like their material.
This is why I hardly buy anything pre-1991 (The year of Leisure). Only two pre-90s acts appear in my record collection, David Bowie and The Clash. This is because I like the music, not so people can come round my house, look through my collection and stroke their beard and go "hmmmm...obscure.".
(I'm not implying that any of you do that, by the way. Just making a point- I hope it's coherent)
By Eddy on Tuesday, August 15, 2000 - 04:11 pm: |
Ian, it is true that the music press do influence many people. Note: Velvet Underground, glorified by the music press, but actually shit. Same with the Clash, very over rated, only a few good songs. The Clash were just a shite rockerbilly band.
The Pixies have some very fine tunes as do the Smiths.
But any music fan in their right mind should have a good collection spanning all eras of modern music, covering diverse genres.
By Ian on Tuesday, August 15, 2000 - 08:26 pm: |
Surely, at the end of the day, Eddy, and I think I'm breaking the world record for most ever commas here, so long as you, the owner, enjoys your record collection, nothing else matters. Fuck what other people say and all that!
C'mon! Lets all join hands and sing...god I don't know...something off MLiR. Works every time. How about...Pressure on Julian!
Well I certainly feel better after doing that! Everybody!
By Indigo/.Spacegirl - yes, it's one and the same! No longer do you have to wonder why we were never photographed together! on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 05:56 pm: |
No, the best anthemic happy song has to be For Tomorrow - I'm sure world peace could be achieved if only everyone in the world would sing la la la la la together - plus, you can sing the chorus when drunk without any of those annoying words to get in your way. The spoken bit tends to be a bit of a problem though. I think it was easily the best song at wembley 99, if only because we were told to "sing up, it's about London".
Come on then! Laa, laa, la la laa, la la la la la la lala

Ke-ray-zee.
By Ian on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 06:47 pm: |
Oh well of course For Tomorrow is the obvious happy song- I was just trying to be a bit obscure and not go for an obvious number, spacegirl/indigo.
Has anyone heard the Chemical World b-side where they do "Pressure..." at Glasto 92 and smash everything up near the end? It doesn't really translate well onto a recording does it?
And before "Never Clever" on the same single you hear Graham say "pretty boy" and then a girl in the crowd shouts out something along the lines of "who do you think you are..." and it trails off. What can she be saying?
A shiny penny for the lucky lad who can tell me the answer.

Yup, that's what makes it Blur's best ever song (probably). I'm going to visit the places namechecked in the song if I'm bored when in London, and see what the view from Primrose Hill is really like. That song is a guaranteed pick-me-up when I'm feeling down and yet manages to be a little sobering - and the brass section on the extended version kicks ass! I love it!

The BBC played it on R1 as part of Blur's Reading set. It might be on the R1 website. It's definitely on Napster.
Legal disclaimer: I do not necessarily endorse Napster or MP3.
By Lucky on Sunday, August 20, 2000 - 09:32 am: |
Ha ha. Well my Napster's flown away to it's-illegal-no-it's-not heaven and I currently have no mp3's anymore. Whoopee. Oh well, I only had about five anyway...
I'm still laughing at think or thwim. Reminds me of some graffiti on a desk at school:
Chris Riley is gay
I agree!
Who are you?
Chris Riley
By indigo on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 12:07 pm: |
Try www.gigabeat.com for a great source of MP3s. Type in Blur and you get about 130 songs found! I think it's friendlier than Napster (is friendlier a word? or is it more friendly? who knows)
Oh God i get my GCSE results on Thursday!
By Shaunée on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 01:31 pm: |
I think friendlier is a word and if it isn't it should be.
And I have a question, is Major Tom a real person or does Bowie just like making people up, cause like he mentions him in more than one song?
By Eddy on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 02:46 pm: |
Well my dear, it has been rumoured that Major Tom was ex British PM John Majors father, who was once a circus act. This is true.
But, you will find that Ashes To Ashes (I think) or one of the other songs on the Scary Monsters album name checks Major Tom for reason of revisting the past as Bowie felt like he was washed up in the Scary Monsters period when he was only 33. I hope that has helped.
By Joe on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 06:34 pm: |
Bowie is continually self-referential. It gets a little annoying.
That's fantastic grafitti Luckster, and your MP3's should still be stored in the Napster directory on your computer. So don't fret.
By Shaunée on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 01:04 am: |
Thank-you kindly boys, you did indeed help.
By Lucky on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 10:40 am: |
Aye, if only the Napster directory on my computer had stayed on my computer. It went for a fuck two weeks ago, and everything got deleted. Damnation to all viruses! I'm off to gigabeat...
By Ian on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 11:13 am: |
Apparently theres a god awful version of blur covering "Oliver's Army" on gigabeat...
By indigo on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 01:59 pm: |
There is - i recommend you don't bother listening to it hee hee hee.
There are all these songs I've never heard of on it - it can get a bit depressing!
By Lucky on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 02:49 pm: |
Oliver's Army?
GOD AWFUL???????
Eh dear, I don't agree with you guys there. I thought it was quite nice, what with all those harmonies and lovely swirling keyboard in the middle.
And what the heck're those fifty million 'Unlabeled' songs anyway?
By Eddy on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 03:02 pm: |
Actually "Olivers Army" is done well by Blur. Also check out, "Nite Club" a Specials cover, as well as "Substitute" cover of The Who, both by Blur. As well as, "Tracey Jacks" cover by The Rentals.
By Kacy on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 03:00 am: |
I actually have the Who tribute CD with Substitute on it. Not many can say that, ah ha ha...I love Blur's covers. They even made "maggie may" decent.
By Lucky on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 07:49 am: |
I love their cover of Substitute. I used to have it on mp3, but I can't find it anywhere now. Vell, I vill just haf to look harder, von't I?
By Eddy on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 02:03 pm: |
Wow, someone that has that Who tribute album. If I remember correctly, Blur are the only big name band on there.
According to Damon, "Substitute" is the worst recording Blur ever did. He refuses to have a copy in his house.
It was done near the Mod Life period I fink, when they were all drunks.
Also notice that on the recording the first chord of the actual song is cut off, so it sounds uneven at the start. They did it in one take, and Dave fucked it up by increasing the tempo with his drum intro.
Still a fucking great version though.
By Ian on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 08:30 pm: |
Lets not forget Alex refused to play on Maggie May for his massive hatred of Rod Stewart.
Well done sir!

Fuck, what a shit selection.
By Tousled on Tuesday, September 12, 2000 - 04:33 pm: |
Wow, I haven't written anything in a while. I'll throw in a few of my faves, as if anyone cares, oooh tragic low self esteem I have. They aren't very unique as it turns out. Anyway, in no particular order:
Different Class, Pulp
Revolver, the Beatles
Automatic for the People, R.E.M.
The Bends/ OK Computer (too hard to pick just one), Radiohead
Can You Still Feel?, Jason Falkner (for those of who who think American music is shit, this proves otherwise)
SFA seem to be on a lot of people's lists. It's kinda funny, because I'm American (don't hate me), and when I was in England in August, one of the boys we met on one of our Kentish pub crawls thought it was horribly tragic that I had never heard their music at all and that we don't get NME in the states. Some other people we met at v2000 (who weren't at all cool) found it astounding that virtually no one in the U.S. knows who ocean colour scene are. Side note, I now have a much better understanding of why people don't like Americans. I must say it's a quasi-founded argument. Extra side note, Pearl Jam and Nirvana: come on, grow some musical taste, fake.

Foxy - I fucking hate impostors too right now and you can understand why, they should all be burned and all the decent coping members should stand round the fire cooking marsh mellows on them shouting "burn! shits! burn!" although I'd probably end up leaping into the fire to drag that TWI impostor out and kill it myself. I'd love to have the pleasure of killing that piece of terd
sorry there I go again
Back to the topic - non-blur albums!!! how could you ever bring up such a thing. I'd never dream of listening to anything other than blur! now leave
lol@eddy. I'm just glad he stopped at TLC. fuck knows where he'd have ended up
By Eddy on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 - 12:32 pm: |
Plus the fact that five of his choices selected inferior albums of bands: De La Soul, Pixies, Pavement, Specials, and Clash.
By Brett on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 - 12:56 pm: |
Yup. Except I wouldn't quit rate pixies and the clash in the same group as TLC as they both did some decent stuff but he still has gay taste in music. i bet he would even like my band

I find it funny you play bass, it's such a "Big Brett" instrument init.
By jonathan on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 - 02:41 pm: |
gay taste in music? actually, I really should have put at least one album in there by the Pet Shop Boys. And Soft Cell. And Tom Robinson.
now you know where I would have ended up.

And headline above Sexy Breakfast, much to Joe's annoyance. Good to see one of my topics still pulling in the crowds, over two months on. My Top 5 has changed completely in that time as well. I'd definitely have "Different Class" in it for a start. What was I thinking that day?
By Joe on Saturday, October 21, 2000 - 01:46 pm: |
You weren't really into Pulp till that recently though...
By Ian on Saturday, October 21, 2000 - 04:13 pm: |
Well, I always liked the obvious ones (Babies, Help The Aged, Disco 2000, This is Hardcore etc) but only around March time did I discover the other tracks that are just as great, such as f.e.e.l.i.n.g.c.a.l.l.e.d.l.o.v.e. and all the others.
I smashed the shit out of my keyboard yesterday because it my computer kept crashing and now the shift button is completely fucked...

ohmigod so tired! been awake 24 hours, fucking awful coach journey grrrr
Hmm, I'm still undecided over Placebo's new one. It's good, but not as good as the last one I think.
By Tousled on Monday, October 23, 2000 - 09:50 pm: |
Hunky Dory is so amazing. There's a bakery in Edinburgh called Hunky Dory. The sign outside said something like "cakes and kookies for all you pretty things". I found that very clever.
By Joe on Monday, October 23, 2000 - 11:41 pm: |
There's a bakery my mum saw once saying "Tell me, where is fancy bread?" cunningly quoting The Merchant Of Venice.

Here goes;
The Clash - 'London Calling'
The Velvet Underground - 'White Light/White Heat or Loaded' ( can't decide )

Sonic Youth - 'Daydream Nation'
Pavement - 'Wowee Zowie'
At the moment anyway.

Well done Kyle, respect man.
By boy on Wednesday, October 25, 2000 - 02:34 pm: |
I'm doing the Merchant of Venice at the moment and it is the most boring book i've ever read.
It's s'posed to be comedy but my german-english dictionary is funnier and it's written by some no-hoper called Shakespeare, the funniest bloke is this one called Shylock, hahahaha, boy is he funny or what.
By Ian on Thursday, October 26, 2000 - 02:15 pm: |
That's quite contradictory.
How about favourite non-blur song?
I am saying this because everyone knows For Tomorrow is the best song ever and so everyone would vote for it.
I think-
I dunno. This is realy hard. Probably something by the Super Furries. Babies by Pulp I guess. No forget it. Its far too difficult. There are millions of great songs out there. Sorry.
By Kyle on Thursday, October 26, 2000 - 02:15 pm: |
Dosen't everyone like Big Star ?
Alex Chilton is king. The man wrote 'Jesus Christ' and 'The Ballad of El Goodo'.....sheesh

I think everyone would like Big Star, if they knew who they were Kyle. In fact you are the only other person other than my mate, who I know of that actually know Big Star.

argh. hm... non blur? well, my collection isn't that big, and a lot of it is from when i was like, 11 yrs old, and liked bush and soundgarden and such...
well, my favourite band after blur is pulp. and radiohead. my new favourite band last year was travis, and this year it's the super furries and primal scream, although so far the latter two have been restricted to MP3s, their albums being WAAAAAY to expensive in canada....
but blur, pulp, and radiohead basically epitomize the very feeling you want to get out of life, the dreams you wish you could live. (it's not the lyrics: mainly the music too). and as this is getting very long and not to the point...
ian, while i was reading all those long, messed messages of yours up there, i couldn't believe it was really you typing that at all.
so my faves are:
*pulp - different class, this is hardcore, (and the kick-ass songs "do you remember the first time" and "babies", which is all i've heard of his'n'hers, 'cos i've never seen that record ANYWHERE is any of the music stores...)
*radiohead's the bends.
*weezer - both albums are pretty good. (the second may appear to be shit, but listen - it's quite fun)
*elastica - elastica
*the chemical brothers - dig your own hole or surender
***********
my old faves:
our lady peace: clumsy
bush: sixteen stone
oasis: definitely maybe, what's the story
soundgarden: *can't remember what it was called... the one with burden in my hand...*
hole: live through this
meh. i just felt like writing a lot.
have a great day!
love, nat.

Favourite Current non-Blur albums at the moment are The Rentals - Seven Minutes More (with Damon on the lead vocals of Big Daddy C). I also have to say, as someone mentioned weezer before, that the two weezer and Rentals albums are four of the greatest albums of the last ten years. Anyone agree...?
By Eddy on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 12:00 pm: |
No.
By nattklubb on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 - 08:23 pm: |
hm, i've only heard OF the rentals and i've herad "the getting by" , and that the rentals, on their two albums (fronted by ex-bassist of weezer's Matt Sharp - btw: weezer's recording a new album now, aren't they?), have collaborated with damon, justine, and everyone from That Dog (although i have absolutely no idea who That Dog are, besides that i think graham dated one of the girls....)
more useless info from *me*.
By Nobbytone on Thursday, November 16, 2000 - 09:39 am: |
I'm glad that this has sparked such a passionate discussion... Thanks for your comments, nattklubb. Give the albums a listen, they are worth it. Weezer should apparently have a new album out march/april next year.

I bought a t-shirt. Why in hell did I buy a t-shirt? They never fit right ...
love for THE DEARS only grows, my darlings - jump on board!
yes, I came to restate my interest in those bands. And I'd go on with more, for a "new" section of this post, if I weren't planning to stop now.

i love all my cd's equally. all the discs (I hang the cases on my wall) are put in a special box next to my bed in case of a fire, and my graham csobt is under my bed coz people always want to touch it and i am scared they will accidentally tear the cover.
at the moment i'm listening a lot to:
-White Bloodcells/The White Stripes
-All Mod Cons/The Jam
-Mower/Mower
-Amnesiac/Radiohead
-Rubber Soul/Beatles
-Muse/Origin of Symmetry

*puts a pair of under-pants on outside of trousers and puts a big cape on*
Right!
Anonymous#1 - use your proper name your coward, you started this fiasco and I have to spend valuable TV time finishing it! Though I can't say I blame you though judging by your list of favourite bands! you sad drip of accidental arabian rat-spawn.
Anonymous#2 - practice what you preach but a credible rant, I was on the verge of congratulating you on my first assumption that your "tantrum" was aimed at a post 8 posts up from yours but I guess that's my responsibility.
Piss off Indigo, you boring cunt!
Now, where was I? Oh yes, try using your own name and I'm sure we'll get along just fine, you seem to have some potential.
Quintal - hahaha, you fuckin' parrot! But then again I didn't expect any more from you. Shut your arse and try speaking out the other end.
MYFL - nice one, I only hope you can put Lucky in it's place now because I can't really be bothered right now. Now settle down! I am king and I don't stand for anyone getting too cocky on this board, you see what happens to people who dare to oppose me on this board.
Lucky - You dullard.
Ho ho ho, now that's sorted things out! Tsk, I'm having to play peace-maker as usual, why can't people just get along and be nice?
Please feel free to thank me for preventing this from flaring up by emailing me at sarki2002@hotmail.com, and if you don't like it go and *sob sob* Bang in the corner! :o)
