Coping: Blur general: Do your parents like blur ?
By wakey on Wednesday, December 6, 2000 - 01:17 pm:

it seems its instiled into parents to not like their kids music whatever it may be. i was wondering whether your parents like any blur songs ? mine like tender, beetlebum, coffe and tv, but they wont realy admit it. my dad realy does like tender though.

and do u get anoyed when they say that blur are realy heavy ( maybe on a few songs but not in general ). i always feel like going out and buying a cradle of filth cd just to show them what heavy realy is, and that what i listen to is proper music !

i dont think my parents are too sure who blur are, my mum still thinks its all just noise tho! which is strange cos she's a Queen fan but who am i to argue?!

My mother hates all my music except select Radiohead tracks, namely Exit Music and Anyone Can Play Guitar. Dad is indifferent, just keeps telling me which old bands they remind him of.

By The Officer on Thursday, December 7, 2000 - 01:34 am:

My mum thinks Tender is ok, and Optigan 1 is 'very swingey'. I think she might like MIMR, but I havent seen her for a while, so I dont know. My dad doesnt like Blur because he lived in London at the time of the Oasis/Blur media spat, and thought they were both a bunch of immature, ignorant louts who were very adept at ripping off his favourte bands from his childhood.

My grandparents liked Tender (though my grandfather thought it sounded like the Village People..! The choir, I guess) Then they thought Bugman was horrible, and skipped to Coffee and TV which they thought was Ok. "...'Nice' music..." my grandmother said. She was listening very closely, a serious look on her face, tilting her head slightly to one side and moving her head head up and down to the beat.

Why would I play songs for my grandparents, I hear you asking..? Well, it just so happened that I had the album in my bag when I dropped in to visit them, and it also just so happened that they were asking me what bands I liked. (For example -- "the Rolling Stones? The Beatles? The Beach Boys? Oh, not that rot your Dad liked when he was your age...umm, David Stardust and the umm, Cockroaches from Space or something? He's married to an Ethiopian supermodel now, I just read it in the Woman's Weekly") I said that I quite liked all of those bands, actually, but they werent exactly of my vintage.

My parents both seem to like "leisure" as a whole more than any of the other records. My mum turned up TNOW when it came on and my dad rather embarrassingly started singing along to "bad day" once. They both generally like crap music though, except my mum did like the Beatles. My dad is one of those rare people that hates them. Oh, and my mum HATES Oasis, she always says when she hears Wonderwall, "that guy CANNOT sing!" =)

By Lucky on Thursday, December 7, 2000 - 07:33 am:

My dad bought me my first Blur record as a surprise, so there's no question there.
My mum likes Leisure much more than the other albums, her favourite being Come Together. She can't stand Music Is My Radar or Chinese Bombs and she loves the Universal, apart from the video.

By Thomas Williams impostor on Thursday, December 7, 2000 - 10:38 am:

My parents turn into big kids rather like the parents on 'Big Kids' (CBBC)
I'm unsure as to why, maybe it is because they have been brainwashed. Oh, i have somebody's sock...who's is it?

By tam on Thursday, December 7, 2000 - 04:56 pm:

i LLLLUUUVVV the universal video...one ofmy favs....

my absolute fav tho is beetlebum!

By Lucky on Friday, December 8, 2000 - 07:11 am:

I like it too. Sigh, parents just don't get it...

By Scratch on Friday, December 8, 2000 - 03:30 pm:

My mum actually went out & bought herself a blur c.d. She also bought Nirvana Unplugged & the Guns n' Roses Illusion albums.

Strang woman. She sits & plays along with an out of tune guitar.

A possible mid-life crisis? Well it's a better alternative than learning to scuba dive.

My mum adores Blur - they were the first band I really got into, when I was about 11, and what with looking after me and my 2 little sisters, she hadn't got into any music since about 1982. I kind of forced them on her at first - in the car when I was younger, the choice was always The Cranberries, Human League, Sting or Parklife! Needless to say, I always played Blur.

As a result, my mum knows all the words and puts Parklife on whenever she wants cheering up! She claims her all time fave song is Yuko and Hiro, but she hates Blur and 13 - apart from MOR, when she can go on about Bowie for hours.

By nathallie on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 03:46 am:

ha ha, no. mummy doesn't know how i can stand to listen to all the "noise". that isn't to say, however, that my mum doesn't have good taste - (she's only 35, for chrissake!). she really likes pulp, and "the man who" (but can't bear good feeling), but her fave music is free-style dance, (she dislikes trance), as well as melanie c, ricky martin, jen lopez, etc. (hates britney, etc.). also: she likes rush, metallica, live ...
hm. no big deal. it's quite alright.

By nat on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 03:50 am:

subnote: daddy likes enrique inglesias, celine dion...
(mum also LOVES abba and celine dion)
stepmum likes religious music, and the likes of sarah mclauchland (?), celine dion, various songs by mellow girl-ish bands, and supertramp.

and my oldest younger brother now likes the boybands (backstreet boys, n*sync, etc.). yeah, he's 8. but he ordered "the man who" 'cos the only band i'd admit to liking to him was travis, 'cos they're quite harmful.

By nat on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 03:50 am:

shit. that's HARMLESS.

By indigo on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 10:47 am:

Actually I used to love the fact that my little sisters slavishly copied my love of blur, but now it's really pissing me off. My youngest sister (13 on Monday) is going to a 5ive concert for gods sake, but she pretends to like blur and all my fave bands to show off to her little mates. They're mine! all mine!

By Lucky on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 11:55 am:

Ha Ha, I've got a friend like that. Only she's at the other extreme and loves Silverchair, Green Day, and all those other ones. She rather embarrassingly said she loved Blur's first album - "Blur"... snigger.

By wakey on Saturday, December 9, 2000 - 03:37 pm:

doesnt it piss u all off though when your folks say blur are just noise, i mean come on, sit them down and play them some of that shit slipknot, or cradle of filth, marylyn manson, i could go on 4 eva. then see if they say that blur are noise, maybe then they'll see that we all like good music played by talented musicians, not transexuals in gimp masks with 9 tons of overdrive to cover the fact that they cant play anything !!!!!

By Randy & Mandy Foxxxe on Sunday, December 10, 2000 - 01:20 pm:

My MOMMA likes Slipnkot and Randys MOMMA likes CRADLE OF FILTH so U just shut up OK.

By wakey on Sunday, December 10, 2000 - 08:10 pm:

very strange musical tastes then, thats all i can say !!

youve got to admit there all shit though them types of bands, i mean they all think death and stuff like that are cool, and they all talk about satan ,but realy there all a bunch of society rejects who if they got in anything remotely scary say like a fight would shit themselves !!!

By RHINOBOLLOX on Sunday, December 10, 2000 - 08:51 pm:

YEAH !!! RIGHT ON WAKEY, ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE GAVE THEM SAD BASTARDS WHAT FOR !!!!

AND THE PEOPLE THAT SAY THAT THE SHIT THAT THEY PLAY IS MUSIC ARE EVEN WORSE !!!

By indigo on Sunday, December 10, 2000 - 09:43 pm:

I don't like the whole Slipknot Marilyn Manson bollocks - not because of the music which is no worse than some pop crap, but because all their fans look the same, and they're always so fucking miserable!

By Bree on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 - 05:55 am:

Marie said you're a prostitute.

By Damon Sideburn on Wednesday, December 20, 2000 - 04:26 pm:

My parents don't like Blur....come to think of it, they don't like me much either.

By ant+dec on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 - 06:33 pm:

ma maw wants to shag damon. and so does dec's. come to think of it, they'd both have them all...

By stw on Tuesday, January 8, 2002 - 11:22 pm:

I agree with wakey.I don't get people who say that Blur is loud. My mum n dad were hippies, so they are ok with the 'not so loud' stuff from Blur. But I love the so called 'loud stuff' too, I love the distortion and the feedback.

BUT, strangely enough, I only like it when it comes from Graham, I don't like it from anyone else. Definitely not from nu metal crap bands; too much testosteron and not enough refinement.

maybe it's just that I luv Graham.
