Coping: Blur general: Modern Art is Rubbish - (#^%£*^$ƒ)
By Lucky in an unabashed attempt to rekindle the old Coping's happy happy joy joy spirit when there used to be topics like that milk one and on Wednesday, July 26, 2000 - 09:34 am:

Why hello

Okay from now on you are warned that this topic is one of those that have nothing to do with Blur (well, sort of) although that isn't really a surprise is it. This topic is where you can flaunt your artistic side using these little buggers on your keyboard: ~!@#%&#*&)(%;':{]
And o'course others that're bound to be hiding somewhere. Show us unique smilies... show us witty images... show us how bored you can become during July and do one of those really big pictures of Snoopy by only using the "#" symbol.
At any rate, I'll start off with a little bloke on a skateboard:

I'm a big fan of minimalism. Yes its all Carl Andre bricks and Mondrian paintings round our house. So the above is my contribution. I'm actually very proud of it and think it is another brave step forward for internet art.

By tam on Thursday, July 27, 2000 - 12:41 am:

i don't like minimalism...anyway what do i like? i'm ot sure...

By Lucky on Thursday, July 27, 2000 - 09:01 am:

Oh yeah, you were the one fixated with semi-colons, weren't you? Nayway (yes, nayway - I'm starting a radical new trend), well done.

By Eddy on Thursday, July 27, 2000 - 01:28 pm:

Art is all bollocks. If it doesn't look like anything it's all bollocks.

I like most art, like Abstract Expressionism and the like, but when you look for meaning in this type of art, it's all bollocks.

That's why I hate intellectuals. They read too much into everyday things, they talk about trancending the human mind onto the plains of consciousness, which in all fairness is a load of shithouse. They make up terms like "interpellation" and relate it to how the media hails us as an audience, this again is a load of shithouse.

Intellectuals and art are all bollocks. When will they learn that everything contains only a surface and no depth or meaning??

This has all become farcial, they are not only confusing the masses, they are confusing themselves to the point where no ones mind will be pure of all bollocks and shithouse. We are all chrome covered clones.

Edward Hopper is a good Super Realist, go on check 'em out.

By Arresting Occifer on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 03:05 am:

Oh my God...

I just read this thread from the top to bottom, and had the misfortune to stumble across an EVEN MORE ridiculous posting from Eddy. Can you be serious, matey? Surely not, surely you had you tongue at least partly planted in your cheek, surely, surely, surely....

But my rational mind is telling me NO. Eddy was and is serious. And my rational mind is curious, amazed and slightly amused by what it just encountered.

Eddy, I hate to be so direct and judgemental - but it appears to me, at least from this distance, that if you dont understand something, cant quite comprehend it, or dont appreciate it on a personal level...then you think its bollox. How do you feel about that? Would you agree with that assertion?

Would you?

I'm interested to hear what you say...really.

By Arresting Occifer on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 03:17 am:

Oh my, just checked the date it was posted. July 27 - a long time ago..!

Eddy, I just dont quite understand how you can say "everything contains just a surface and no depth or meaning". Of course this is true in one way (an artwork is actually nothing more than paint and canvas, for example) and it's also plausible from a strictly sagacious viewpoint - but surely it's plainly obvious that as humans we attach relevance and meaning to eVerYthinG we encounter. Art relies on this human process. Bollox? I dont think so. Human expression, yes. Intrinsically good or bad? I dont think so.

By Jen AKA Foxy Lady on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 10:06 am:

hey can't y'all just get along? Eddy is just a crazy kinda guy and we had a fight coz I stopped emailinhg him *LOL* he's not saying anything like that. way 2 much arguing gang. Coping used to rock. *sigh*

By Lucky on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 11:42 am:

Yeah. Cos people argued so much. THOSE were the days, matey.

By Eddy on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 12:11 pm:

Haha, no this is brilliant.

Jen I didn't argue with you because you stopped e-mailing me, you actually started arguing with me because I said your postings were quite annoying and shit.

And Occifer, I think you are brilliant, in a number of your posts you have slagged me and my thoughts, which I think is good cos it has given Coping some colour.

In response, I stick by what I said. I became disillusioned at University with all the intellectual clutching at straws when it came to certain subjects and theories. Many of them were ridiculous and I couldn't see the point of even considering thinking about studying and analysing rather trivial matters and subjects. When it came time to give my own theory, it always fell on deaf ears.

In many cases intellectuals analyse things to shit and analyse so deep that what they come out with is very absurd. This can be seen in many Media courses relating to the public and most Sociology papers.

Of the things I came across in Drama and Sociology courses, I have never needed to use, and can actually remember little of. What they taught me was pointless. It really just creating a cynic of me. Well more of one at least.

And we come to art.

I love art, and love the ideas behind it. Like Abstract Expressionism for instance: It is just a lot of squiggles, but, Jackson Pollocks etc, said there was a meaning behind it, a message of the inner workings of the mind and all the Carl Jung bollocks. But, at the end of the day, it's just paint init?? Just a surface, no meaning, just a canvas with random paint splashes.

I enjoy thinking about the meanings of art, Futurism etc, and studying them, but really it is all bollocks. Bollocks because the evil heart of art is to be elitist. Most of the people on Earth are stupid and ignorant, and cannot understand the meanings behind art. I understand them, but because of the elitist attitude to this I cannot stomach it, beacuse paint and clay cannot show anything but a surface, the real meanings exist within the soul, these meanings cannot exit the body. They are born within the person and die within the person. That is why the human race knows so little about anything, and to try to search for meaning results in rubbish theories or an early grave.

Bollocks. Just like the new Radiohead album.

Just take Wine. Wine buffs crap on about the bouquet and woodiness of the taste and fine textures. This bollocks. Wine is for getting drunk, not for sniffing, sipping and spitting.

And remember, one of the worlds most famous artists, Andy Warhol, made his life creating anti-art. His work had no meaning or hidden agenda, he merely portrayed Average Joe and his society who drank Cambells Soup and wanked over Marrilyn Monroe.

Or am I just talking bollocks??

Goodnight, you lovely peeps.

By Butter~Twirrélinov on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 02:17 pm:

...but doesn't the artist's art outlive the person, Eddie?
Surely the great use of art, ie poetry and literature is its pleasure, but for me that does not preclude analysis. I feel a certain glee, almost a smug complacency, in finding meaning within lines of poetry and the dialogue of playwrights, something akin to the feeling mathematicians must feel on finding the right answer to a perplexing sum, the most incomprehensible algebra, etc, etc. The difference is, in Maths there's only one right answer (though several ways of finding it), whilst in 'art' there's always room for differing opinions and varying interpretations. Is my theory behind Sylvia Plath's 'The Rabbit Catcher' (that it's about oral sex) 'rubbish'? Maybe. But please don't tell me there's anything elitist in it. It doesn't bother me that most people don't care, or understand, or even read poems, for that matter. 'As it is, they go surprisingly far ~ among strangers, around the world, even. Farther than the words of a classroom teacher or the prescriptions of a doctor; if they are very lucky, farther then a lifetime.'
Of course, many interpretations and certainly a lot of analysis reads as glorified wank ~ all decked out with French phrases and trenchant Literary allusions ~ but not ALL of it. Pliz, don't throw that bébé out with zat bath water.

By Joe on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 08:44 pm:

Sob.

I have learnt the hard way that doing a piece of artwork and then making up a load of bollocks about extended metaphor really doesn't get you an A. No, a C, in fact.

Not only that but I have an interview at Cambridge the day after tomorrow to read English, and I'm having some serious self-doubt. I really feel like crying, and like everyone is cleverer (more clever? oh what's the point...).

Sob.

By tam on Wednesday, December 6, 2000 - 12:50 am:

hey people

just wanted ta say hey...so hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Arresting Occifer on Wednesday, December 6, 2000 - 02:51 am:

Well, Eddy, your arguments make sense. Yes, they do. But then, almost every argument proposed by someone of at least reasonable intelligence makes at least some sense, if not a lot of sense. We are all the products of extremely different environments and experiences - no two people are the same, therefore we cant expect everyone to think in the same way. I dont expect that. I also dont really think that I am necessarily right, or that anyone else is right, for that matter. I'm just saying what makes sense to me, what rings true...

Shit, that was quite a pompous disclaimer, eh! Anyway, I wont lapse into a state of ego-manically fueled, semi-conscious hysteria and proceed to reel off reams and reams of personal beliefs and statements, quotes from respected persons, examples from my own life and the lives of others...no, I wont. I promise.

But I dont understand the 'anti-art' statement in regards to Warhol. Eh? I mean, yeah, I suppose, kind of, a bit, but no, not really, not really at all, yeah. Wasn't he just reflecting the society he saw around him? The fact that it was 'new', 'modern', 'confronting' and quite different to other forms of art doesnt mean it should be called 'anti-art'. Indeed, surely such a term should be non-existent....hmm, but I recall saying something like that in another thread...

And I agree with Butter about the poor old baby that seems to constantly gets disposed of with the dirty bathwater. You cant disregard something purely because of the people that populate it's scene. I can understand you not being able to stomach certain forms of elitism, but that in fact doesnt have anything to do with anything except not liking pretension in other human beings. Nothing to do with art.

Oh dear. My flatmate is having sex. He breaths deeply, sucking in the air like he's having an asthma attack. He's really quite loud. She, on the other hand, only says little high-pitched "oop. oop. oop's." They are distracting me, the happily mating couple. I suppose I shouldn't begrudge them their time together, though. More important than a Coping post.

Wine, Eddy? To that I have to say: Bollox! You can do whatever you want with it. Everyone's different. I have an empty glass sitting next to my monitor now. I drank it last night, and I wasnt trying to get drunk. I just like the taste.

By Eddy on Wednesday, December 6, 2000 - 09:48 am:

So in conclusion: It's all a load of bollocks.

Init great to have a good topic again on Coping. Thankyou Arresting Occifer.

HEY TAM!

By Arresting Occifer on Wednesday, December 6, 2000 - 01:06 pm:

How the fuck did you come to that conclusion, Eddy..!? I thought we were maybe finding some plausible middle-ground here, but obviously it must've been all in my own head...

My conclusion: I dont think it is bollox because I like it and it makes me feel good.

As for the thanks; it was a pleasure. Anytime.

anyone can come up with the things thay are calling master pieces. "The lights go on/off" is a perfect example. Speaking of modern art...

I saw an advertisement for a short film festival, calling for entries, a few months ago. This is the ad:

After 2 sold-out sessions at Cinema Europa, Jam Factory in August 2001, and March 2002, Upstartfilms is again looking for independent short films (20 SECONDS TO 20 MINUTES!) to show on its website. Films placed on the website will be eligible for consideration to be showcased at our upcoming July function. LIFE IS SHORT. SHORTS ARE LIFE!! For further details, login into www.upstartfilms.com.au.

I wrote the following reply, without thinking:

Damn. I have a thoroughly entertaining film on my hands, but it unfortunately only lasts 17.5 seconds. Is this too short? It's of John Howard seducing and screwing his dear wife, before falling asleep.

And today I had an email from someone asking me to send them a copy. Ho ho.
